Michael blew ashore near the small Florida Panhandle town of Mexico Beach on Wednesday afternoon as one of the most powerful storms in US history, with winds of up to 155 miles per hour (250 km per hour). A fallen tree crashed through the home where a woman and her baby were killed in Wilmington North Carolina after Hurricane Florence made landfall . The storm is nearly at a standstill over southeastern North Carolina. The state wildlife agency says red tide, a type of algae, has been a naturally occuring phenomenon along Florida's Gulf Coast since at least the 1840s and that blooms occur almost every year in the Gulf of Mexico. The Florida red tide organism, known as Karenia Brevis, produces brevetoxins that can affect the central nervous system of fish and other vertebrates, causing these animals to die. (more...)

Tropical Depression Three has strengthened to Tropical Storm Chris off the coast of North Carolina Sunday morning. Further strengthening of the storm is likely, and Chris is expected to become a hurricane by mid-week. The new solar mandate would apply to all houses, condos and apartment buildings up to three stories tall that obtain building permits after January 1, 2020, the report said. Buildings with roofs that are too undersized for standard solar systems are debarred from the projected standards. Andrew McAllister, a state energy commissioner, has pointed out that residential and commercial buildings are estimated to contribute roughly 40 percent of the state's greenhouse gas emissions.
