Already some flooding from outlying rain bands was reported on Alabama's Dauphin Island and flood control locks and gates were being closed along Louisiana's bayou-marbled coast as Cindy hovered almost stationary - still well offshore. The watch area includes Beaumont, Nederland, Port Arthur and Sabine Pass. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles mainly to the north and east of the center. (more...)

Eurostat, the European Union's statistics agency, said Thursday that economic growth across the region was a quarterly 0.6 percent in the January to March period, 0.1 percentage point up on the previous estimate. Unemployment is falling, but wages aren't picking up as many people take part-time or lower wage jobs. The U.S. economy added 138,000 jobs last month, less than the 174,000 jobs gained in April and lower than expected. That was down a bit from April and was modestly below economists' expectations . Hiring was still enough to help keep pushing unemployment lower. It's too soon to worry, but not too soon to start paying attention. Economists surveyed by Reuters expected nonfarm payrolls to grow by 185,000 and the unemployment rate to hold steady at 4.4 percent. (more...)

Known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, the program now serves 44 million people and cost $70 billion previous year. The statement gave no other details of the incident. A statement from the airline said it turned back due to a "disruptive passenger". Passengers worked with the flight crew to subdue the man. Heavily armed police boarded the plane after it returned to Melbourne. The flight was around seven hours away from Kuala Lumpur . The incident is the latest involving the Malaysian airline that is still missing MH370 that disappeared in 2014 and had MH17 shot down in Europe a year later. (more...)

Alex Avila , Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez hit consecutive home runs in the first inning, and the Detroit Tigers halted the Texas Rangers' 10-game winning streak with a 9-3 thumping. He has five homers and 18 RBIs in 25 games, and although he was signed to be a part-time catcher, he played first base Saturday.
