UK PM May: Failure to Back Her Brexit Plan Would Be ‘Catastrophic’

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaks outside 10 Downing Street after a confidence vote by Conservative Party Members of Parliament, in London Britain

Theresa May has warned of a "catastrophic and unforgivable breach of trust" in democracy if MPs reject her Brexit deal and the United Kingdom remains in the European Union.

Mr Hunt warned that failure to deliver Brexit would be "incredibly damaging" for the United Kingdom and something the country would regret for "many, many generations".

Mr Hunt suggested that legally binding assurances from Brussels over the deal's controversial backstop arrangements should be enough to allay the fears of many MPs over the long-term impact of the agreement. "It would be a catastrophe", Juncker said.

He said if it is defeated, Britain should continue to press the European Union for a deal that "respects the referendum but if Brussels' "intransigence" persists "we must be willing to leave the European Union at the end of March on World Trade Organisation terms".

"To heal our nation, we need to provide a positive narrative that actually addresses the inequalities that have been allowed to ferment over recent years, rather than follow through with bogus solution that worsens them".

But he has insisted the United Kingdom should not afraid of a no-deal Brexit, despite forecasts from the Treasury and Bank of England warning that it could trigger an economic crisis worse than the 2008 financial crash.

May faced further opposition to her deal from her former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab who believes the United Kingdom should pursue a hard-Brexit.

After a week in which parliament forced the government to promise to come back with a "plan B" within days if May's deal is rejected, Mr Barclay said the risk of parliament acting in a way that frustrates Brexit had increased.

Mrs May is expected to suffer a big defeat when parliament votes on Tuesday.

That could open the way for several different outcomes, ranging from a so-called "managed no-deal" exit to another referendum. And Brexit paralysis ultimately could lead to no Brexit.

Rejecting her proposed package, she said it "would be a catastrophic and unforgivable breach of trust in our democracy".

"No doubt the disagreements would have continued too, but the vast majority of people would have had no truck with an argument that we should leave the European Union in spite of a vote to remain or that we should return to the question in another referendum".

"I still think that passing this deal is the responsible thing to do".

"I'm not saying for one minute that the whole economy will grind to a halt, but there are very specific industries in this country for which a no deal Brexit will have an immediate negative impact".

Part of Mrs May's Brexit deal includes plans for an "ambitious, wide-ranging and balanced" trade agreement, but the text is not legally binding.

Asked whether she agreed with Mr Hunt that the United Kingdom can thrive after a no-deal Brexit, Ms Rudd told Today: "This is a strong and great country, we will find a way to succeed, but I do not think that no deal would be good for this country and I'm committed to making sure we find an alternative".

The prime minister will make this plea: "I ask MPs to consider the consequences of their actions on the faith of the British people in our democracy".
