Trump says record-long govt shutdown could be resolved 'in 15 minutes'

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz has been critical of President Donald Trump's response to disasters in Puerto Rico

NBC News reported on Thursday that Mr Trump had been briefed on such a plan but the White House denied it.

An estimated 800,000 federal workers have been affected by the lapse in funding - either by having to work without pay while it lasts or by being furloughed.

A concourse at Miami International Airport was shut down for part of the weekend because not enough Transportation Security Administration agents were present to staff all of the airport's the security checkpoints. But I want to give them [Democrats] a chance to see if they can act responsibly'.

Democrats and the president remain at loggerheads, with party leaders saying they won't agree to fund any kind of wall or barrier and Trump insisting he won't agree to reopen the government until the wall is funded. But he said House Democrats would aggressively probe the Trump White House.

"I would consider DACA, but I think we'd complicate it", Trump told reporters during an impromptu gaggle on the South Lawn of the White House.

Two new polls, by The Washington Post and ABC News, along with one from CNN, showed American voters blame Trump and Republicans more than Democrats for the partial government shutdown and oppose construction of the wall. "But to understand that plan you would have to understand the fact that I won the election, and I promised safety and security for the American people". It started at midnight on December 22nd, 2018 and just passed the previous record of 21 days from a shutdown in 1995-1996. That ended when congressional Republicans agreed to a short-term funding bill for closed agencies that was later extended.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, both Democrats, made a joint statement earlier in the week accusing the president of "manufacturing a crisis" and calling on him to re-open the government.

The shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history, surpassing the 21-day closure that began during Bill Clinton's presidency in 1995.

Since that meeting both sides have blamed each other. "I think it's the most insulting article I've ever had written", Trump told Fox News's Jeanine Pirro after the New York Times reported that law enforcement officials in 2017 began investigating whether Trump had been working on behalf of Russian Federation against American interests. "And so in order to survive, he is taking positions and doing things that you and I would think make no sense at all, and don't fit everything we know about him as a person, but it fits what he thinks he needs to do in order to survive".

Sen. Lindsey Graham says he encouraged Trump during a telephone conversation Sunday to reopen government for a short period to try to negotiate a deal with Democrats to end the impasse.

"If today the national emergency is border security, tomorrow the national emergency might be climate change", Sen.

Eight Republicans also broke rank to vote with the Democrats last week to restore funding to the Treasury Department and the IRS.

Some US media reports suggested the White House was considering diverting some of the $US13.9 billion allocated a year ago by Congress for disaster relief in such areas as Puerto Rico, Texas and California to pay for the wall.

Vice-President Mike Pence visited the Washington headquarters for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and pledged that the administration will keep fighting for the border wall.

Former U.S. president Barack Obama stunned Republicans when he bypassed Congress and, relying on what he called his pen and his phone, used executive powers to enact his agenda, including protecting millions of young immigrants from deportation. But DACA advocates including Dreamer Hilario Yanez, who was interviewed on Fox News Wednesday night, said he supports a border wall and sees "opportunities for compromise".
