United States warns citizens of arbitrary action in China

Diplomat Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were seized separately last month by China's spy agency

August 22: A NY court issues a warrant for the arrest of Huawei Technologies chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou.

While her release on bail was front-page news in, most media have not reported 's detention.

The Canadians were picked up after China threatened to retaliate against Canada for arresting Wanzhou. While the catastrophe caused by Wanzhou's arrest is still evident, the warning was a necessary move to alert and secure Americans from China's retaliatory detentions.

China has demanded that Canada release Meng, who faces possible extradition to the US on suspicions of trying to evade American sanctions on trade with Iran.

"At least" eight of those 13 had since been released, the Canadian government said in a statement, without disclosing what charges if any have been laid. I don't think Meng's arrest was entirely necessary. China is Canada's third-biggest trading partner, though dwarfed by the US, which trades eight times that amount, and comprises 50% of all Canadian imports and exports.

This is the highest level Canadian delegation to visit China since Michael Kovrig, a diplomat on leave from Global Affairs employed by the International Crisis Group in Beijing, and Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur who organized trips to North Korea, were arrested on December 10.

"It's not advancing any objective other than the goal of further raising doubts about China's reliability as a country that's going to follow the rule of law". China has accused the Liu family of being "involved in economic crimes".

The update calling for increased caution comes after China detained two Canadian citizens last month on suspicion of endangering state security.

The warning did not mention Meng or the Chinese nationals arrested in the United States on espionage allegations.

But Beijing-based Western diplomats and former Canadian diplomats have said they have no doubt the cases are linked.

Canada has not changed it travel advisory for China since Kovrig and Spavor were detained.

With files from CBC, Canadian Press.

The Trudeau government has demanded the release of Kovrig and Spavor, and call the arrests arbitrary. "We will have to wait and see", Wu said. Similar statements come out from the United States, Britain and the European Union.

Rights groups say conditions in Chinese detention facilities are often basic and can be harsh, with lack of legal representation and due process compounding worries about treatment.

"Foreigners who work in China notice this", he told the paper. Spokeswoman Hua Chunying says Canada should "correct its mistakes" and stop acting at the behest of the United States.

Sen. Joseph Day said that engaging directly with Chinese lawmakers is crucial but his group doesn't want to do anything to hurt Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. The men have not been charged yet. The Global Times, an English-language publication of the official People's Daily, says Robert Lloyd Schellenberg appeal of his conviction will be heard on December 29.

"The message from Global Affairs Canada was that it was better that we go than not go", Cooper said. The Wall Street Journal reports Chinese authorities took the odd measure of inviting a number of news outlets to the appeal. "I think we need more information transparency".
