Garbage, feces take toll on national parks amid shutdown

Human waste, rubbish overwhelm some US national parks in shutdown

The makeshift toilet situation has forced two campgrounds to close due to the "health hazard" it creates, National Parks Service spokesman Andrew Munoz told the Times.

On those rare occasions when the federal government gets shut down by political gamesmanship in the nation's capital, the places where the effects of those shutdowns can be seen most quickly and easily are America's beloved national parks.

Many national parks remain open but with skeleton staffs.

Overflowing toilets and illegal off-roading activities prompted the closure, the parks service said.

In addition, the closure of Wawona Campground, Hodgdon Meadow Campground, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, Crane Flat Snow Play Area, Goat Meadow Snow Play Area, as well as all park visitor centers was announced earlier on December 30, 2018, due to "impacts from human waste and public safety concerns".

However, signs citing the "lapse in federal appropriations" explain the complete closure and no staffing or even shoveling of snow. In Sequoia, home to vast and ancient giant sequoias, General Highway was closed because overflowing trash bins were spreading litter and posed a threat to wildlife and the icy, jammed roadway was seeing up to three-hour delays, according to the National Park Service. Plus, the National Park Service website will not be updated, leaving visitors in the dark about campground re-openings.

Visitors will also be given tips on the best way to experience the park during the partial government shutdown. Park visitors are permitted to hike as far as they want.

"It's just slightly more offensive because it's a clean natural park", Yager said. All other visitors will be asked to enter Yosemite using the Highway 140 entrance and enter the park via the El Portal Road.

British holidaymakers visiting National Parks in the U.S. have been warned to check before they travel as the USA government shutdown continues to cause significant disruption and environmental damage to a number of tourist destinations.

Meanwhile, some 800,000 government workers are either furloughed or working without pay until the shutdown ends.

"I think that we don't need the wall", Neblett said.

"It is unknown how long the road will be closed", park officials said on New Year's Eve. "I would rather they close than be damaged", said Joe De Luca, a sales associate at Nomad Ventures in the town of Joshua Tree.

"I made a decision to clean up this one section, because that's what Americans will do", said Snake, a 64-year-old member of the indigenous Ho-Chunk Nation in Wisconsin.

At Joshua Tree in southern California, trash cans were spilling over and fights were breaking out among campers on the grounds, with no rangers on hand to adjudicate, according to Ethan Feltges, who runs the Coyote Corner gift shop outside the park.

During the last partial government shutdown in January 2018, there was also chaos and controversy.

David Lamfrom, director of the California Desert and National Wildlife Programs of the National Parks Conservation Association, said the volunteer efforts can't supplant the work of the park service.
