China allows first-ever US rice imports ahead of trade talks

US trade delegation to travel to China next month: Report

"The two sides have indeed made specific arrangements for face-to-face consultations in January in addition to continuing intensive telephone consultations", said Gao, without confirming the date of the planned meeting.

Next month's meeting will be the first face-to-face discussion the two sides have held since President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping agreed on a 90-day truce in Argentina on December 1.

Top US officials who have spearheaded the trade negotiations thus far - including US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin - will, however, not be making the trip. Beijing recently announced a third round of tariff cuts, lowering the duties on more than 700 goods starting January first.

China's customs administration announced Friday it had approved USA rice imports, a move that comes during a 90-day tariff truce between the two countries which are engaged in a bruising trade war. President Trump has agreed to hold off on $200 billion in additional tariffs while negotiations are taking place.

China, meanwhile, wants the U.S.to remove the punitive tariffs that have been imposed and not add new ones, but suspects the US will ask for more before it agrees to do that, the people said. Beijing so far has pledged to resume buying American soybeans and to at least temporarily lower retaliatory tariffs on USA autos.

"Even as the U.S side is in the Christmas holiday period, China and USA economic and trade teams have been in close communication, and the consultations are progressing in an orderly manner as scheduled", China's Commerce Ministry spokesman Gao Feng said Thursday. He is pushing the Asian nation to reduce trade barriers and stop alleged theft of intellectual property.

The National Customs Administration reported that the measure has immediate effect and contemplates the entry of different varieties of the grain, but must comply with the phytosanitary standards of the country and be registered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The two sides have been participating in phone meetings and will continue to do so in an "intensive" manner, according to Reuters.

The two sides are maintaining "close communication", Gao said.

Trump said his agreement with Xi would go down "as one of the largest deals ever made".
