Major Storm Whipping Up Blizzard Conditions

NWS Issues Winter Weather Warnings and Advisories

Travel, the weather service advises, will be hard.

In a special weather statement, Environment Canada said "a significant winter storm is expected Thursday night into Friday night".

A major winter storm this week could cause havoc for millions of people traveling through the Plains and the Midwest as New Year's approaches.

Accumulation appears light across the Front Range at 1-3 inches, but prepare for a snowy morning commute.

Brickman says snow should taper off by Friday morning.

After highs near 33 degrees Thursday, Friday's high may top out in the upper teens with an overnight low of 8 below.

The National Weather Service predicted areas between Lake Andes, Mitchell and Watertown, South Dakota and Fargo, North Dakota could see between 12 and 18 inches of snow by Friday.

It will be a colder day with highs reaching about 30 degrees with a nasty north wind of 15-30 miles per hour.

Lincoln and Omaha, look to remain mainly free of snow, with rain and very little snow accumulation, but may be affected by fog. Those in the area should expect blowing snow through Thursday. Wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour also are possible, creating whiteout conditions. Colder weather returns over the weekend with temperatures topping out in the mid-20s on Saturday. Morning highs will will be in the 40s before falling in the low-30s by late afternoon.

During winter storms, the city of Mitchell requires vehicles to be removed from Emergency Snow Routes when the city receives 2 inches or more of snow. As of right now, it looks like we'll start off the new year with some of the coldest temperatures of the winter season thus far.
