Trump digs in on the wall and the shutdown

The shutdown occurred after the 72-year-old president demanded over bn to fund the construction of the wall on the border with Mexico

At some point the Democrats not wanting to make a deal will cost our Country more money than the Border Wall we are all talking about. Workers are not paid in full while on leave, though are customarily compensated with backdated pay once the shutdown is over.

National Park Service employees open the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse near the White House, Monday, Dec. 24, 2018, in Washington.

"As long as the president is guided by the House Freedom Caucus", Pelosi and Schumer said of that conservative faction, "it's hard to see how he can come up with a solution that can pass both the House and Senate and end his 'Trump Shutdown'".

When asked whether he had a message for federal workers either furloughed or working without pay, he replied that "many of those workers have said to me and communicated, 'Stay out until you get the funding for the wall'". "I can tell you it's not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they would like to call it", Trump said on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump told reporters after a Christmas Day phone call with troops that he won't reopen the government until he gets the $5 billion in funding for his border wall.

The shutdown started Saturday after funding lapsed for nine Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies. In retaliation, Trump refused last week to sign a wider spending bill, temporarily stripping funding from swaths of the government.

Calling the construction a wall had sparked antipathy among Democrats - which Mr. Trump said was hypocritical.

"My kids and I will be home alone starting Wednesday instead of on vacation with my husband who is an essential federal employee and was told his approved annual leave was now denied", tweeted Lyndsi Parker, using the hashtag "ShutdownStories", which is shedding light on some of the chaos created by the shutdown. The Coast Guard is the only arm of the military affected by the shutdown because it is funded through the Department of Homeland Security. State highway workers were sent to the area Monday to erect "no parking" signs along US 70 outside the monument. But many rank-and-file workers have gone to social media with stories of the financial hardship they expect to face because of the shutdown, now in its fourth day. "But it's all the same thing", he said of Democrats' preference to give him federal monies for border "fencing" rather than the concrete and steel wall on which he campaigned so hard in 2016.

"The only time they went against it, there was only one time: when Donald Trump said, 'We want to build the wall, ' " the president said. "Yes, sir", she said, and Trump continued: "Because at 7, that's marginal, right?"

"Most view this as an act of ineptitude", he said.
