Eight-year-old Guatemalan boy dies in United States immigration custody

8-year-old Guatemalan boy dies in US custody

Later, he was found to have a fever and was held for an additional 90 minutes before he was released with prescriptions for an antibiotic and Ibuprofen.

He died after midnight on Tuesday.

The 7-year-old Guatemalan girl died on December 8 after reportedly experiencing dehydration and high fever.

A CBP spokesman declined to elaborate, but said more details would be released shortly.

The cause of the child's death is not known.

An investigation into CBP actions will be conducted by the agency's Office of Professional Responsibility, the news release said.

The Guatemalan government has been notified of the death, "and is now engaging the father and any family members in Guatemala", wrote the CBP.

The death of the boy comes the same month as the death of Jakelin Caal Maquin, a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl who also died in US custody, according to The New York Times.

A 7-year-old girl, Jakelin Caal Maquin, fled Guatemala with her father, and after surviving the 3218km journey to New Mexico, she died December 8, fewer than 48 hours after CBP detained her and her father. The agency added that the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General and the Guatemalan government had been notified, and that they were "engaging" with the boy's father, as well with family members in Guatemala. Jakelin and her father were with 161 other people when they were apprehended in Antelope Wells, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) southwest of Alamogordo.

"The initial screening revealed no evidence of health issues". The form was in English, but CBP officials said agents provided a verbal translation.

The father signed an English-language form stating Jakelin was in good health, but it remains unclear whether he understood what the form said.

The news triggered outrage on social media, days after the body of a Guatemalan migrant girl who died in similar circumstances was returned home.
