Ruth Bader Ginsburg has pulmonary lobectomy: What to know about the procedure

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday underwent a pulmonary lobectomy for two malignant nodules in her lung

The Supreme Court announced that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had two nodules removed from her lungs in a surgical procedure.

Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said Ginsburg, one of the court's nine justices, underwent a procedure known as a pulmonary lobectomy on Friday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY.

After the surgery, there was "no evidence of any remaining disease", Arberg added. If Ginsburg were to retire, it would allow Mr. Trump to appoint another conservative justice, further tipping the ideological balance of the court.

The growths were found during tests Ginsburg had after she fractured ribs in a fall on November 7.

The Supreme Court takes a winter break, but as long as everything with her recovery goes well, she's hoping to be back at her position when the Court resumes in January.

Other details were not provided by the Supreme Court.

In 1999, Ginsburg underwent surgery for colorectal cancer, and 10 years later she was treated for early stages of pancreatic cancer.

A lobectomy can be recommended if a person is diagnosed with COPD, has lung cancer or benign tumors, according to the American Lung Association.

Ginsburg is now said to be "resting comfortably" and is set to remain in hospital for several days.

In August, she broke three ribs in a fall in her office, and was hospitalized overnight for observation. In 2014, she underwent a procedure to have a stent implanted to open a blocked coronary artery. Flores estimated that she would stay in the hospital 3-6 days and should be up and walking in the next day or so.

She said in an interview earlier this year that she thinks she has at least five more years on the Supreme Court. However, Ginsburg has given no indication that she will be leaving the court while Mr. Trump is in office.

In recent years she has become something of a cult figure, particularly on the left, known by the nickname "Notorious RBG", after the late rapper Notorious BIG.

A film based on her career, On The Basis of Sex, is set to be released on Christmas Day.
