MSNBC, CNN Anchors Gush Over Nancy Pelosi After Oval Office Meeting

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence took part in a heated exchange with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer at the White House

"Chuck and Nancy must give us the votes to get additional Border Security!", referring to the Democratic leaders in the Senate and House, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi.

An Oval Office photo op with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer descended into a back-and-forth on the likelihood of President Trump winning votes in the House & Senate on government funding, and the effectiveness of a border wall.

Pentagon spokesman Jamie Davis said that while the military doesn't now have plans to build portions of a border wall, "Congress has provided options under Title 10 U.S. Code that could permit the Department of Defense to fund border barrier projects, such as in support of counter drug operations or national emergencies".

Democrats, too, suggested the meeting ended well enough, noting that Trump neither accepted nor rejected their offer to fund the government with up to $1.6 billion for border security, rather than the $5 billion he's been demanding for the wall.

Trump's comments have made it hard for Republican leaders to negotiate even as they try to avoid a shutdown that neither party wants. "Please don't characterise the strength that I bring to this meeting as the leader of the House Democrats, who just won a big victory", Ms. Pelosi said.

"Too many, unfortunately, of my Republican colleagues here in the Senate and in the House seem too afraid to tell the president when he's wrong", Schumer said.

The deal "meets her requirement not to be seen as a lame duck and the (Democratic) caucus' desire to see the next generation" take the reins in several years, he said.

In a tweet today and at the Oval Office meeting, Trump made reference to that contest, suggesting it was a reason Pelosi would not negotiate on wall funding.

Mr Trump is seeking far more for his long-stalled border wall than the NZ$2.3 billion the Senate has agreed to for border security, including physical barriers and technology along the United States southern border. "They will have their path as we go forward. I will take the mantle, I will shut it down", Mr Trump said.

Schumer said Wednesday Trump wanted to hold the government "hostage to a petty campaign pledge" to build a wall to "fire up" his political base. "We have to have an evidence-based conversation about what does work and what money has been spent and how effective it is", Pelosi said.

The two Democrats and the president sparred over funding for the Mr Trump's proposed border wall.

"I am comfortable with the proposal and it is my intention to abide by it whether it passes or not", Pelosi said.

Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that Mexico would still technically pay for the wall, through the additional money the USA will make from the not-yet-ratified United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement.

The administration official said, "Additionally, activities that are supported by multi-year funding, such as FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund, will continue operations", referring to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
