High school football player arrested over death of pregnant classmate

High School Football Player Kills Pregnant Cheerleader Leaves Body in Dumpster

Police believe a high school footballer in IN stabbed a cheerleader pregnant with his baby to death because it was too late for her to get an abortion.

St. Joseph County Police in IN say 17-year-old Breana Rouhselang's body was in a dumpster about a block from her home.

The St. Joseph County prosecutor's office said Trejo is being held on a preliminary murder charge and that formal charges were expected Monday.

Neighbors told local media that they saw authorities recover Rouhselang's body from a dumpster near her home around 11 a.m. (1600 GMT) on Sunday.

Rouhselang's mother went to Trejo's home, looking for her daughter.

Trejo told authorities he was aware of Breana's pregnancy and that he was alleged to be the father, the affidavit said, but he said neither wanted to have the baby.

Along with being a cheerleader, Rouhselang's stepmother said the girl also was a manager for the football team and played softball, according to The South Bend Tribune. The 16-year-old American football player then tossed the knife and Breana's phone into a nearby river.

Visitation and funeral arrangements for Breana Rouhselang have been set.

Lt. Alex Arendt of St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit said the teen, who has since been identified as Aaron Trejo, 16, of Mishawaka, Indiana, was arrested Sunday.

When police arrived at the 400 block of Battell Street around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, they found evidence of a violent crime before ultimately discovering Rouhselang's body in the dumpster. She also said her stepdaughter was about six months pregnant when she died.

He had been planning on killing Rouhselang and the baby for about a week, police said.

The teen is said to have made a chilling confession to officers, telling them: "I took action, I took her life", after she did not terminate her pregnancy.

An autopsy determined that Rouhselang died from multiple stab wounds and that her scarf had been "tied so tightly that strangulation was occurring before Breana died", the charging document states.

"The Mishawaka High School family suffered a awful tragedy", the school said in a statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends who have been affected by this great loss", the statement said.

Mishawaka schools Superintendent Dean Speicher said some of the high school's 1,500 students took part in a silent vigil Monday morning to honor Rouhselang.

"The juvenile court has no jurisdiction over someone charged with murder if they are 16 years of age or older", St. Joseph County Prosecutor Ken Cotter told the Indianapolis Star.
