Trump says Heather Nauert will replace Haley as UN ambassador

Heather Nauert

The President announced Friday he would nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to replace Haley.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert is set to be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to USA media reports. He called her "very talented" and predicted she will be "respected by all".

Nauert, who Trump praised as being "very talented" and "very smart", would replace Ambassador Nikki Haley who has been a vocal advocate for United States foreign policy and Israel at the UN.

While the former Fox News anchor struggled under former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who kept her blocked out of his inner circle, Nauert built a rapport with current Secretary Michael Pompeo, who came to trust her as a reliable voice and advocate for Trump's agenda.

GOP consultant Rick Wilson tweeted Friday morning that he "really didn't expect we'd have UN Ambassador Nauert until President Hannity, in consultation with Vice President Doocey and Secretary of State Ingraham met to discuss their foreign policy goals".

As a New York-based anchor and correspondent at the Fox News Channel, Nauert oversaw breaking news, anchored programs, covered global and domestic crises and interviewed senior elected and military officials. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly before Trump's announcement.

"She's excellent, she's been with us a long time, she's been a supporter for a long time", Trump told reporters on November 1. Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the UN, may want a more junior person in the role so as to de-emphasize the importance of the relationship between the United States and the United Nations.

Nauert's appointment would realign power dynamics within the President's national security team, as the ambassadorship would likely be downgraded from the Cabinet level post Haley had insisted on.

And, last but not least, no one would deny Nauert's attractiveness, which seems crucial in the noble role of being the "US face" and White House policy mouthpiece overseas, doesn't it?

Haley told The Weekly Standard she would remain in NY for the next two years so her son could finish high school there, and she wanted to remain an active voice on foreign policy.

Two administration officials confirmed Trump's plans Thursday.

"In the absence of any actual diplomatic experience I suppose it's reassuring to United Nations supporters that she will arrive with no particular personal agenda", said Loren DeJonge Schulman, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security. She does not have prior political or policy-making experience.

United Nations diplomats say that behind the scenes negotiations are central to an ambassador's job, and that presentation skills are also important. In a sign of the difficulties the administration has had, the UN General Assembly on Thursday rejected a USA -sponsored resolution condemning Hamas, the Islamist group that has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

Nauert covered domestic and global stories as an ABC News correspondent from 2005 to 2007 prior to joining Fox.
