Nation Says Goodbye to Bush: ‘To us, he was close to perfect’

Former US President George HW Bush laid to rest

Later on Wednesday, a plane carrying the body of Bush, who died last week in Texas aged 94, landed in Houston where there will be a funeral service on Thursday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church.

An emotional Brian Mulroney says he's convinced George H.W. Bush will go down as the most courageous, principled and honourable occupant of the Oval Office the United States has ever known. Bush also mentioned some of his father's close friends, including former President Bill Clinton, the man who defeated him in the 1992 election.

Scott Moore, Union Pacific's Senior Vice President of Corporate Relations, says he expects people will use Bush' funeral train route to pay tribute and reflect on the life of the former president.

The passing of Bush, only the second president to see his son follow him to the Oval Office, has led Americans to reflect on his life of duty and service to country as a leader of the so-called "Greatest Generation".

George W. Bush turned the humor back on the acerbic ex-senator, saying of the late president: "He placed great value on a good joke, so he chose Simpson to speak". Also in the front row were Michelle Obama and her husband, former President Barack Obama.

Bush died November 30 at his home in Houston.

The cathedral in northwest Washington is where the elder Bush comforted his son at a memorial service in the aftermath of 9/11, one of many national events that have been held in the gothic revival space. "For millions and millions across the globe, the world became a better place because George Bush occupied the White House". His wife Hillary - Trump's former rival - looked straight ahead, despite nodding in acknowledgment to a greeting from Melania.

George W. Bush broke down briefly at the end of his eulogy while invoking the daughter his parents lost in 1953 and his mother, who died in April.

As Cuomo argued that shaking hands with Trump showed that, Lemon doubled down, "That's why he's president and I'm not. I don't think anybody behaved badly", he said, recalling the bitter 2016 campaign between the two.

"After Mrs. Bush's death, general companionship was a big part of Sully's job", John Miller, president and CEO of America's VetDogs, said in a phone interview.

No such statement is expected that the Bush funeral, but it's likely that he will be eulogized as a leader unique for his devotion to public service.
