Israel's Netanyahu should be indicted for corruption, police say

Israel Police Recommend Indicting Benjamin Netanyahu In Corruption Probe

In a joint statement with the Israel Securities Authority, police said they had also found sufficient evidence to charge Bezeq's controlling shareholder with bribery as well as other officials at the company. It alleged that Netanyahu sought to interfere with content of Bezeq's Walla website "in a way that would benefit him".

He argued in a statement that "these recommendations were determined and leaked even before the investigations began".

There was, however, insufficient evidence to charge Mr Netanyanu's son Yair, police said.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be charged with bribery and fraud, police have said. The country's attorney general is now expected to decide the next step.

The Bezeq case, known as Case 4000, is the most serious of which Netanyahu has been accused.

Mr Netanyahu said the allegations had no legal basis and nothing would come of the investigation.

Israelis have been holding protests to demand the prime minister's resignation over the corruption scandals, but Netanyahu has described the events as part of efforts meant to topple him "at any cost".

Netanyahu's colleagues in the ruling Likud party have lined up behind up, attacking outgoing Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh for releasing the recommendation on his last day on the job.

He is also suspected of negotiating favorable press coverage with the Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Arnon Mozes in Case 2000. In exchange, Elovitch instructed journalists at the news website Walla! to provide favourable coverage of the prime minister and his wife.

The prime minister compared his defense to Hanukkah, which celebrates "the victory of light over darkness", he said. She also illegally paid approximately $10,000 for private chefs, prosecutors said.

Some analysts say Mr Netanyahu could call a snap election because of the legal proceedings, with the next national vote not due until November 2019.

Tzipi Livni, the former Foreign Minister, said, "Netanyahu has to go before he takes down law enforcement authorities in order to save himself".

The decision to indict the Prime Minister can only be made by the Attorney General, Avichai Mandelblit, who will now review the findings of the police investigation. The people of Israel deserve a clean leadership.

"A prime minister with so many criminal cases around him can not continue in his job and must resign", said Avi Gabbay, the head of the Labor party.

Mr Netanyahu held the government's communications portfolio until past year and oversaw regulation in the field.
