At G-20, possible 'breakthrough' seen after trade talks

The Latest G20 leaders attend show in Argentine opera house

The annual summit of leaders of the top 20 economies of the world is being attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has made clear it does not want to torpedo the longstanding U.S. relationship with Riyadh, however.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman greet each other at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Buenos Aires.

White House bureau chief for Voice of America Steve Herman has since revealed that the quake was felt within Buenos Aires, where the summit is taking place.

"I think the most likely scenario is that [Chinese President] Xi Jinping doesn't offer big enough concessions to Trump, and so nothing much comes of the G20 meeting", said Julian Evans-Pritchard from Capital Economics.

A final communique adopted after all-night haggling in the summit in Argentina said all other G20 members agreed to implement the "irreversible" Paris Agreement on climate change, while respecting different paces of economic development.

Two European officials involved in the discussions said the US was stymieing progress on both.

The leaders of the world's largest economies opened talks on Friday overshadowed by US President Donald Trump's threat to escalate tariffs on imports from China as well as military tensions between Russian Federation and Ukraine. It represents part of a broader push by Trump to separate the USA from agreements and obligations that he believes do not serve national interests.

Mr Macron warned that Europe might not sign trade deals with the South American regional bloc Mercosur if Brazil's incoming president, Jair Bolsonaro, pulls out of the Paris accord.

Two European officials involved in the discussions said the U.S. is hampering progress on both matters.

Meanwhile Wang Xiaolong, director general of the Foreign Ministry's department of worldwide economic affairs, said negotiations between Chinese and U.S. officials were making some progress.

Merkel told reporters it's important that the talks "hopefully bring solutions, because all of us see that we are affected indirectly when Chinese-American economic relations are not as frictionless as a world order requires".

And huge differences remain on climate change, trade and the Khashoggi affair.

A joint declaration is expected to be published at the end of the summit on Saturday.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri and President Donald Trump struck up a host of deals on the sidelines of the G20 summit, including investments in infrastructure and energy projects. While the possibility of selling US military equipment was allegedly floated during the encounter, Argentina emphasized that it did not have the funds to make any purchase. In doing so, they cited the trade conflict as well as political uncertainty.

"Europe is united in its support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity", Tusk said, calling the standoff "a cause of great concern". Russia's foreign minister regretted the move, but said "love can't be forced".

French President Emmanuel Macron said he told the prince in a separate meeting that Europeans will insist on worldwide experts being part of the investigation into Khashoggi's killing, Reuters reported.

Saudia Arabia has denied that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman played a role in Mr Khashoggi's killing.

Bin Salman has been at the center of the global spotlight over whether he is responsible for Khashoggi's murder.

Trump was also scheduled to speak with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

United States President Donald Trump walked off, waving.

In the wake of the meeting between Macri and Trump, the finance and energy ministries and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin signed an agreement to foster cooperation and identify "trade and investment opportunities" in the energy sector, the local publication added.

It must still be ratified by lawmakers in all three countries, and passage in the US could face a tough road in the House of Representatives after Democrats won a majority in November midterm elections.

Russian Federation is committed to deepening practical cooperation and coordination with China to safeguard global peace and security and build an open world economy, Putin said.

"These agreements are massive, and a vast number of technical details need to be scrubbed and wrapped up", she said.

In his speech to the G20 leaders' summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Friday, Xi said the world economy is at a historic crossroad and urged the global major economies to "demonstrate courage" to put world economy "on the right track". The only reminder of these events in Argentina so far is the message of support from Hamburg "Block G20" activists on a banner next to the parliament building in Buenos Aires.

China "will continue to stick together with the Arab country on issues involving their core interests", Xinhua quoted Xi as telling the prince. The two countries have always been at odds over the South Atlantic islands known as the Falklands in Britain and the Malvinas in Argentina.

She eventually took off on a flight from Madrid bound for Buenos Aires on Friday.

Regarding May's visit, he said: "Dialogue must be maintained".
