Ohio Senators speak up in wake of GM plant closings

'You better get back in there soon’: Trump vows to get tough with General Motors over plant closures

Since General Motors announced on Monday that it will cut 14,000 jobs and idle manufacturing plants in the Midwestern states of OH and Michigan, Trump has had the company squarely in his line of sight, firing off several tweets attacking the decision of GM and its CEO Mary Barra.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said Toyota suggested it could cut jobs in the United States in response to President Donald Trump's tariffs.

"Very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO, Mary Barra, for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland", Trump tweeted. "We are going to be looking at certain subsidies regarding electric cars and others and whether they should apply or not".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters at a briefing, "I don't know that there's a specific timeline" for taking action against GM.

Trump has long promised to return manufacturing jobs to the United States and particularly the Midwest. GM will stop production at the Lordstown, Ohio, and Hamtramck, Mich., assembly plants.

Trump, who has expressed anger over GM's closing of American auto plants this week, retweeted the tweet without comment.

The US automaker explained its decision as a response to a slowdown in new-car sales, as well as to consumers shifting toward pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles. As of now, GM shares are back to where they were before Monday's big announcement.

"We're dealing with a corporation that doesn't have any respect for Canadian and American workers, and I think we should treat them in the same vein", said Jerry Dias, national president of Unifor, which represents GM workers in Canada.

"We're going to fight for it and we're going to do everything that we can to ensure that General Motors makes a decision to continue to invest in Ohio", Portman said. GM has said it expects to hit the 200,000-vehicle threshold by the end of the year. Drive It Home is also asking community members to light a candle for the plant and use the group's profile frame on Facebook to show their support for workers.

"Since [Trump's] been president, GM has idled that plant", Betras said.

"It's the state and locals that are going to be able to put icing on the cake", she said, pointing to big incentives extended to Foxconn in Wisconsin and Amazon in Virginia and NY. "Today, GM is continuing to take proactive steps to improve overall business performance, including the reorganization of its global product development staffs, the realignment of its manufacturing capacity and a reduction of salaried workforce". The company kept the plant open after receiving millions in state subsidies.

GM said it has invested more than $22 billion in US operations since 2009, when it exited bankruptcy protection.

Through October, the US imported more than 13 percent less steel compared with a year ago, while Europe has imported more than 10 percent for a record high, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing the European Steel Association. However, for Chinese manufactured cars this figure rises to 25 per cent.
