Cohen Pleads Guilty to Lying to Congress About 'Moscow Project'

Does Manafort have any credibility left? | LRC Presents: All the President's Lawyers

He previously identified individual one as Trump.

Michael Cohen may be charged with fraud over US$20 million in loans. Sater said he spoke only to Cohen about the project. Trump Organisation spokeswoman Amanda Miller and chief legal officer Alan Garten didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

The Cohen case was filed in NY a week after Trump and his lawyers provided Mueller with responses to written questions and is the first new charge filed by the special counsel since the appointment of Matthew Whitaker, who has spoken pejoratively about the investigation, as acting attorney general with oversight of the probe.

Trump also falsely said that the real estate proposal was "very public" and that "everybody knew about" the deal because "it was written about in newspapers" and elsewhere. And this has been a highly eventful week for Mueller's probe.

Michael Cohen, former personal attorney to President Donald Trump, exits federal court on Thursday in New York City.

Both men have been heavily critical of the investigation, and Corsi this week said he had rejected a plea offer from Mueller's team.

Ahead of a second trial, Manafort struck a plea deal with Mueller's team in September in which 10 charges from his first trial were dismissed, thereby avoiding a second trial on foreign-lobbying and money-laundering charges.

"I made this statement to keep up with the political messaging and out of loyalty", Cohen said Thursday. In early 2016, Trump repeatedly disavowed commercial ties between himself and Russian Federation and claimed that all contact between his company and Russian Federation had terminated. Mueller is trying to determine whether or not Stone acted as an intermediary between the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks at a time when WikiLeaks was publishing or getting ready to publish hacked Democratic e-mails, but Stone has maintained that he never discussed WikiLeaks with Trump in 2016. Trump has issued repeated denials. "I really do believe that people are increasingly hopeless, and that that leads to drug use, it leads potentially to suicide", he told The Associated Press.

According to the information read out in court, Cohen made a false statement regarding a proposed Trump Tower deal in Moscow that he was working on in 2015 and 2016.

Mr Trump told reporters of the Moscow real estate project, which never came to fruition: "When I'm running for president that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to do business". The one charge of making false statements had to do with testimony he gave to Congress.

Cohen worked on the deal with Felix Sater, a Russian-born developer and United States citizen, who served as a deal broker on the project.

"That was a project that we didn't do, I didn't do".

Cohen had also disclosed that Trump was personally aware of the deal, signing a letter of intent and discussing it with Cohen on two other occasions. Trump ultimately didn't make the trip.

Trump's anger about the investigation raises the possibility that his answers might be contradicted by Cohen, Manafort and others. However, within Cohen's plea agreement, the criminal information document repeatedly mentions "Individual 1", who-by using very basic context clues-is nearly assuredly now-President Trump.

Cohen has been scheduled to be sentenced in the earlier matter on December 12.
