Conservative vs. moderate in Mississippi Senate election

The two candidates in a Mississippi U.S. Senate runoff are rallying supporters a day before President Donald Trump visits the state to campaign for Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Hyde-Smith was appointed earlier this year by Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) to fill the seat vacated by former Sen.

Iowa's Ernst, meanwhile, emphasized themes including low taxes, a strong economy, higher military spending and stopping migrants from entering the country illegally.

Democrat Mike Espy also spoke in the eastern MS city.

Espy was introduced by Ayanna Pressley, a Massachusetts Democrat who will join Congress next year after unseating an incumbent in the primary.

On Nov. 15, another video surfaced online in which Hyde-Smith said making it more hard for people to vote is a "great idea".

Hyde-Smith apologized and said she meant no ill will with the hanging comment. Trump said she made it somewhat "in jest" and that she felt bad about it.

About 100 anti-Trump protesters were also there, chanting "Impeach 45" as they held signs with red strikes through Hyde-Smith's name. Joni Ernst has been corrected in this item.

Amid outcry over racially insensitive remarks made by Mississippi Sen.

Jones spoke Sunday evening on a conference call for the Espy campaign. Jones did what Espy is trying to do - win as a Democrat in a conservative, Republican-dominated state.

A spokesperson for Hyde-Smith's campaign didn't respond to requests for comment on MLB's request. Campus Reform analyses of several MS colleges show that students are exposed to far more politically active, Democrat-supporting faculty and administrators than Republican supporting ones. The victor of Tuesday's runoff gets the final two years of a term he started. Jones said he has been "an independent voice for the state of Alabama", and Espy would be the same for Mississippi.

While the MLB front office has donated to many political candidates on both sides of the aisle during this past campaign - including Ted Cruz, Dianne Feinstein, Jeff Flake and more - donating to a candidate who has fallen into hot water like Hyde-Smith can make for a weird look for the league as a whole.

Hyde-Smith and Trump are set to appear together at a late Monday afternoon event in the northeastern city of Tupelo, best known as the birthplace of Elvis Presley.

If victorious, Espy would become Mississippi's first black senator since Reconstruction and the first Mississippi Democrat elected to the Senate since 1982. Her opponent in Tuesday's run-off election, former Democratic Representative Mike Espy, is an African-American.

Tuesday's victor gets the final two years of a six-year term.

News of the 2007 measure comes amid increased scrutiny of Hyde-Smith's past after a series of recordings surfaced that featured her making comments about attending a "public hanging" and suppressing the votes of students in the state. There is usually a large decrease in ballots cast between the first election and a runoff.

The concurrent resolution was approved by Mississippi's House and Senate.
