Six isolated tribe encounters: The results are usually violent

Tragedy in Andamans

It may take some more days and. These laws cover all islands in the region.

An American missionary killed in a hail of arrows by an island tribe untouched by modern civilisation was bent on converting them to Christianity, it emerged Thursday.

He wrote that the tribesmen reacted angrily, adding that they were about 5 feet, 5 inches tall and had yellow paint on their face.

Extracts released by the family of John Allen Chau, 26, reveal that he was saved from one arrow by his Bible as the tribe expressed hostility to his presence the day before he died.

"I think I could be more useful alive. but to you, God, I give all the glory of whatever happens", Chau wrote.

"Why did a little kid have to shoot me today?" he wrote in his notes, CBS News reported. Asked why, and she replied, "My prayers".

In an Instagram post, his family said it was mourning him as a "beloved son, brother, uncle and best friend to us". To others he was a Christian missionary, a wilderness EMT (emergency medical technician), an worldwide soccer coach and a mountaineer.

In a statement, they said John Allen Chau "loved God, life, helping those in need, and had nothing but love for the Sentinelese people". In its first census on the island, taken in 1991, it estimated 117 people were living there.

North Sentinel, which is around the same size of Manhattan Island in NY, is home to the hunter-gatherer Sentinelese people, believed to number only around 150.

In 2017, the Indian government also said taking photographs or making videos of the aboriginal Andaman tribes would be punishable with imprisonment of up to three years.

Two years later, members of the tribe killed two poachers who had been illegally fishing in the waters surrounding their home island, North Sentinel Island, after their boat drifted ashore, according to Survival International, a nonprofit dedicated to the protection of isolated tribal groups, which calls the tribe the "world's most isolated". The morning after Chau's final trip to the island's shores, the fishermen saw his body being dragged and buried in the sand.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.

Pathak said officials are consulting anthropologists, tribal experts and scholars to figure out a way to recover the body.

After the fishermen realized Chau had been killed, they left for Port Blair, the capital of the island chain, where they broke the news to Chau's friend, who notified his family, Pathak said.

"They were very well aware of the situation, but they still arranged for a boat and everything", said Yadav, a move he described as "pushing [Chau] in the mouth of death".

Officials typically don't travel to the North Sentinel area, where people live as their ancestors did thousands of years ago. The Sentinelese, whose numbers have dwindled to near extinction, believe in a primitive life and speak their own language, totally shun modernity and avoid contact with other humans.

"The authorities lifted one of the restrictions that had been protecting the Sentinelese tribe's island from foreign tourists, which sent exactly the wrong message, and may have contributed to this awful event", the group said in a statement.

Police investigating the apparent killing of an American by an isolated island tribe off the coast of India said they have surveyed the island by air and have carefully visited the area to identify where the man died.
