Google is letting users watch full free, ad-supported movies on YouTube

YouTube

For the time being, there are only about 100 movies available on this new ad-supported venture on YouTube.

According to AdAge, the "Free to Watch" section was added to the "Movies & Shows" section in October.

The Google spokesperson told Gizmodo the movies come courtesy its partnerships with major Hollywood studios, and honestly, the roster of free stuff to watch looks pretty great! Until now, users were able to purchase movies and TV shows.

The company began adding the films to its website last month, relying on an ad-supported model to deliver the movies to users for free. In the meantime, have a hunt around for free movies on YouTube and see what you can find - you might not have to pay anything for your next movie night.

YouTube earns revenue from the movies through advertisements, instead of charging customers to view the movies.

As AdAge reports, YouTube chose to introduce free, ad-supported movie streams because it's what users want, with Rohit Dhawan, director of product management at YouTube, stating "We saw this opportunity based on user demand, beyond just offering paid movies".

As HotHardware reports, sitting through the free version of The Terminator available on YouTube requires also viewing ten commercial slots. Currently, the assortment includes hits such as The Terminator, Rocky 1 through 5, the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi and both Legally Blonde 1 and 2.

YouTube says that it started the ad-supported movies due to demand from viewers and that it saw the ad spots as an opportunity for advertisers.
