House Dems Holding Conference Call on Sessions Ousting

Why no blue wave? Maybe because Democrats kept running away from own base

"The president's dismissal of Attorney General Sessions, and his appointment of Whitaker, who is a complete political lackey, is a real threat to the integrity of that investigation", Nadler said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said there is no need for it, but other Republicans, like Arizona Sen.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey is one of 18 Democratic state attorneys general who have written to acting US Attorney General Matt Whitaker calling for him to recuse himself from overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Whitaker has made public comments critical of Mueller's investigation, and critics have called on Whitaker to recuse himself from oversight of the inquiry.

And he said the attorney general could kill the investigation by starving it of funding.

"We're far from that right now", he said.

While some speculated the "46" in his Twitter handle MattWhitaker46 referred to a future run at president-Trump is the 45th US president-it ostensibly refers to his jersey number, 46, when he played with the Iowa Hawkeyes football team from 1989 to 1982.

"Trump's actions are being compared with those of U.S. President Richard Nixon in one of the most controversial episodes of the Watergate scandal, the Saturday Night Massacre", said organizers. John Yoo, a former Justice Department lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, for example, wrote last week that Whitaker can not serve as acting attorney general because he was never confirmed by the Senate. Because Attorney General Sessions was recused, it's not clear whether Whitaker-Sessions's former chief of staff-has been kept informed about the progress of the investigation.

In an article for The Hill, Whitaker said that former FBI Director James Comey was "just wrong" to say that there was no case against her: "I was a federal prosecutor for five years and was proud to serve in the Department of Justice, and I would've brought that case".

"Republicans captured at least four Senate seats held by Democrat incumbents and these are tremendously talented hardworking people that did this: Indiana, North Dakota, Florida, Missouri".

Sessions is gone and UI alum Matthew Whitaker is replacing him for now.

Mr Trump was infuriated by Mr Sessions's decision to recuse himself from overseeing the probe in March 2017, often complaining that he needed an attorney general who would protect him.

The House Judiciary Committee will summon Whitaker - by subpoena if necessary - to examine his "expressed hostility to the investigation", said Nadler, the New York Democrat poised to lead the panel.

"The left is trying to sow this theory that essentially Russians interfered with the United States election, which has been proven false", Mr Whitaker said in an interview with a conservative Christian broadcaster.

News of Mueller's team working up a final report is not entirely unexpected.

That move has angered the president, who has said he wouldn't have offered Mr. Sessions the job if he knew he was going to do that.

As Mueller has got closer to the heart of the Trump family's closely guarded financial secrets, the president has become more enraged.
