Trump signs proclamation stopping illegal immigrants from being given asylum

Central American migrants on Wednesday continued to straggle in for a rest stop at a Mexico City stadium, where about 4,500 continue to weigh offers to stay in Mexico against the desire of many to reach the USA border.

"What we are attempting to do is trying to funnel. asylum claims through the ports of entry where we are better resourced, have better capabilities and better manpower and staffing to actually handle those claims in an expeditious and efficient manner", they said. Instead, thanks to the Democratic Party's insistence on open borders, a dysfunctional system was created where people who sneaked into the country and got caught already in the United States were allowed to retroactively claim they were asylum seekers.

The Department of Justice said in a press release on Friday that migrants who illegally enter the United States through the southern border with Mexico will be ineligible for asylum.

The directive is a temporary measure, and circumvents current laws that state anyone who applies for asylum in the USA is eligible to have their case heard, no matter whether they arrived legally or illegally.

"This interim regulation is not only inconsistent with the letter of the law, but flatly contradicts it", Frelick said.

Administration officials said those denied asylum under the proclamation may be eligible for similar forms of protection if they fear returning to their countries, though they would be subject to a tougher threshold.

President Trump has signed an immigration order requiring asylum seekers to make their claim at their point of entry to the United States, and barring illegal immigrants from requesting asylum. Trump has vowed to stop them from entering the country and made the issue a key part of his closing argument ahead of this week's midterm elections.

The new changes were likely to be met with legal challenges, too. "It is illegal to circumvent that by agency or presidential decree", said Omar Jadwat of the American Civil Liberties Union.

It is unclear how numerous migrants traveling in the caravans will approach the ports of entry and attempt to enter legally. And in the last five years, the number of those requesting asylum has increased by 2,000 percent, it said.

The move would largely affect migrants from Central America's Northern Triangle - Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador - who cross the US border with Mexico to flee violence and poverty in their home countries. Those moves have been challenged in court.

It's unclear how many people en route to the USA will even make it to the border.

Those delays increase the chances that caravan members could attempt to cross illegally by fording the Rio Grande or trekking through the desert to set foot on USA soil and surrender to Border Patrol agents. Several smaller groups were trailing hundreds of miles to the south; officials estimated about 7,000 in all were in the country in the caravans. The migrants are largely poor people, and many say they're fleeing violence.

Similar caravans have gathered regularly over the years and have generally dwindled by the time they reach the USA border.
