Americans elect Muslim women to Congress for the first time

Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are set to become the first Muslim women elected to the US Congress

Michigan's Rashida Tlaib and Minnesota's Ilhan Omar both made history Tuesday by winning their elections and becoming the first Muslim women to be elected to the U.S. Congress.

The pair's election to the US House of Representatives comes amid widespread negative feeling against American-Muslims by their compatriots.

Omar is running in Minnesota's strongly Democratic fifth congressional district.

She said her political life began attending local Democratic Farmer Labor party caucuses with her grandfather after arriving in the US.

A Muslim woman from Detroit has won the congressional seat long held by Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who stepped down amid sexual harassment claims by former staffers.

Omar fled Somalia's civil war with her parents at the age of eight and spent four years at a refugee camp in Kenya. She is also the first Somali American to win election to national office, according to CNN.

"It is a district that is very much interested in making sure our progressive values are represented", she said in an interview with MinnPost.

Republicans who charge that the Democratic Party has departed from its pro-Israel bona fides point to Tlaib and Omar as proof.

Tlaib is the oldest of 14 children born to Palestinian immigrants, and is the second Palestinian American elected to Congress after Michigan Republican Justin Amash, BuzzFeed reported. She will succeed the first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, who vacated the seat to run in Minnesota's attorney general race.

Rashida Tlaib has become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.

MA and CT will also send black women to Congress as firsts for their states, while Arizona and Tennessee are getting their first female senators.

"We did this, together", she wrote on Twitter Tuesday night.

She said although her disdain for President Donald Trump's policies on immigration, health care and other issues motivated her to run, that was not the only reason.
