Mohamed Salah statue mocked by fans as striker gets Ronaldo treatment

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Egyptian football star Mo Salah recently got an unusual tribute in his home country that has left people around the world in stitches.

The statue unveiled in Sharm el-Sheikh shows Salah, who set a new Premier League goalscoring record last season, in his trademark celebration pose with arms aloft to the crowd.

The player's distinctive curls are also seemingly exaggerated as part of the casting.

The sculpture of the Egypt worldwide, which was shown at the World Youth Forum in his native country's Sharm el-Sheikh, comes after a bust of Cristiano Ronaldo was widely mocked.

Sculptor Mai Abdel Allah told Egyptian media that she created the statue because Salah stood as a symbol of excellence for Egyptian youth, describing the artwork as "distinguished and executable".

But she also admitted she had no hand in pouring the bronze into the mould and was "not happy" with the final product, according to CNN.

Some on social media have said the sculpture looks more like 1970s singer Leo Sayer, while others likened it to cartoon characters Beavis and Butt-Head and the character Marv Merchants from the Home Alone films.

Sculptor Mai Abdullah, who produced the work, said she was "inspired to make the statue by Salah's gesture of opening his arms to the fans" after scoring goals, which he did easily last season as he fired Liverpool to a top-four finish in the Premier League.
