Jürgen Klopp leaves out Xherdan Shaqiri to avoid inflaming Serbian tensions

Reports: Klopp Considering Dropping Shaqiri From Belgrade Visit

Xherdan Shaqiri has not made the trip to Serbia for Liverpool's Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade as Jurgen Klopp is keen to avoid off-the-pitch distractions.

"The boys are very disappointed, I'm very disappointed and we have to do better".

The Reds now occupy top spot in their Champions League group and will want to replicate their 4-0 result in the last meeting between the two sides.

A Milan Pavkov double put the hosts in dreamland in the first half and they saw off pressure from Liverpool after half time to complete an historic win.

The defeat represents a major blow to Jurgen Klopp's side, as most defeats do in fairness, who may now require maximum points from their final two group games to get through to the Champions League knockout stages.

Liverpool had a lucky escape at the start of the second period - the referee failing to award Red Star a penalty when a shot struck the arm of James Milner.

"We need to cool the situation down".

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes Roberto Firmino should be dropped by Liverpool. They last played in the European Cup in 1991 as holders, when beating the likes of Liverpool would not have been regarded as such a surprise.

Almost three decades on, Red Star don't have a household name in their squad and needed to qualify for the group stage through the playoffs.

Klopp isn't anxious about the safety of Shaqiri, rather he'd prefer to keep the narrative around football than politics.

An away loss to Napoli took the shine off their win but they picked up their second win against Red Star Belgrade to top the table at the half-way mark. A deflected cross from Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson also bounced onto the crossbar after the break.

Liverpool have scored 48 goals in the Champions League since the start of last season (16 games), the most of any team in the competition.

Kosovan-born Shaqiri caused outrage in Serbia with a pro-Kosovo "double eagle" gesture that represents the Albanian flag during Switzerland's World Cup win over Serbia in Russian Federation.

"And I said it, he's our player, he will play a lot of games for us but not [on Tuesday], that's all".
