Va. sisters were found dead in NYC, duct-taped together

2 bound bodies found in NYC were missing Virginia sisters

The family are Saudi nationals from Jeddah.

According to other family members, the sisters were close, prompting Tala to run away form her home in Fairfax and move to New York City, where her older sister lived.

The Naitonal Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported the 16-year-old missing August 24 and noted she may have been with her sister.

The NYPD says there's no known nexus between the sisters' death and the Saudi government.

The women's bodies washed up along the banks of the Hudson River in Riverside Park, on the Upper West Side, Wednesday, Oct. 24.

There were no obvious signs of trauma to their bodies, police have said.

The girls' movements before their death are not yet clear but police said they had moved to the USA with their mother in 2015, settling in Fairfax, more than 200 miles from where their bodies were found on 24 October.

Rotana was enrolled at George Mason University, but left in the spring.

Tala Farea was 16 years old at the time of her death.

The Royal Consulate General of Saudi Arabia in NY confirmed in a statement Tuesday that the Farea sisters were students accompanying their brother in Washington, D.C.

Several rumors surfaced with regards to the girls' mysterious deaths, including claims that they'd been missing for two months. That office also noted that it had "appointed an attorney to follow the case closely".

"They were not in the water that long", NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said last week, according to the New York Post. The lack of obvious trauma appeared to rule out a theory they jumped into the river from the George Washington Bridge.

The Saudi embassy in Washington declined to comment on the reports.

New York City police sent a detective to Virginia to learn more about the sisters.

The Week's Ryan Cooper likened the Farea sisters' death to the 1976 car-bombing and assassination of Chilean dissident Orlando Letelier-an assassination which was carried out with the full knowledge and tacit acceptance of top US policymakers, including then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, according to the Washington Post. But they are still trying to work out how they died.
