Apple Announces the New Mac Mini

Dierks Bentley on stage at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View

Professionals may be tempted to pick up a maxed-out Mac mini, but doing so won't come cheap.

The starting configuration includes a 3.66 GHz 4-core i3 processor, 128GB of SD storage, and 8GB of memory at $799. The speed bump is largely a product of quad- and six-core chips from Intel's 8 generation family of Core processors.

RAM now goes up to 64GB running at 2666 MHz. while storage is all-flash, running at a claimed four times faster than the old Mini and going up to a healthy 2TB. There you will find four Thunderbolt 3 ports, two USB Type-A ports, HDMI, audio and Ethernet (including a 10Gbps option).

NEW YORK-For the first time in four years, Apple has announced a new Mac mini, and it's a departure from its predecessor. The upgraded device comes with up to 60% faster graphics. This is an update that was a long time coming, but it seems the wait was worth it. With all the bells and whistles, the Mac Mini comes in at a staggering $4199.

The Mac mini 2014 kept the same compact design of the Mac minis that came before it, with a small, square-ish metal design that measures 7.7 x 7.7 x 1.4 inches (19.7 x 19.7 x 3.6cm) and weighs 2.6 pounds (1.19kg). At the high end, it'll offer a 3.2GHz (4.6GHz turbo) 6-core i7 with 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD, and 10gigE. Both Mac mini variants are expected to ship from 30 November 2018, according to Apple Malaysia's official website. Apple's T2 security chip is onboard as well, allowing improved drive encryption.

Apple describes the new Mac mini as "an absolute beast on the inside". The Mac mini like its laptop cousin is also the first in its series to be made out of 100 percent recycled aluminium that gives it a smaller carbon footprint - almost 50 percent less than the previous generation.

The Mac mini 2018 is packed with modern hardware that makes it a brilliant mini computer, so if you've been tempted to pick up the tiny Mac, the Mac mini 2018 is definitely worth the money.
