CBI vs CBI: Odisha Congress joins nationwide protests against Centre

Breaking : SC Directs CVC To Complete Enquiry Against Alok Verma In Two Weeks Under Supervision Of Justice AK Patnaik, Nageswara Rao Can't Take Any Policy Decisions

Hours after the government asked CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana to proceed on leave, the former moved the Supreme Court challenging the Centre's decision.

The apex court said the CVC enquiry on allegations and counter-allegations should be completed in 10 days under the supervision of this court.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for CVC, said that several documents were required to be looked into during the inquiry and 10 days time would not be sufficient.

The top court said former Supreme Court judge A K Patnaik will oversee a Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) inquiry into the allegations and counter allegations and the report has to be placed before it within two weeks.

It also said interim CBI chief M. Nageswara Rao would be restricted from taking any major policy decisions.

On Friday, the bench also refused to hear Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi on Mr. Asthana's challenge to the Central government order of October 23 sending him on leave- "we can not hear you on something not before us". It said for the time being, no monitoring by anyone else should be allowed.

Earlier, Congress Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that Gandhi and other leaders were arrested from the CBI headquarters.

This decision by the Central government to send Verma on leave came in the wake of the internal crisis that has plagued the CBI after it registered an FIR against its joint Director Rakesh Asthana.

The Court has issued notice to the Centre, the CVC and Mr. Asthana on the petitions. Asthana is said to have withstood huge political pressures during the fodder scam probe.

In a dramatic turn of event, the Delhi Police on Friday withdrew at least two of its PSOs, who had nabbed IB operatives near CBI chief Alok Verma's house, and sent them to unknown location.

He argued that CBI director is appointed for a tenure of two years by a committee comprising the Prime Minister, leader of opposition and the Chief Justice of India as per provisions of the DSPE Act. He also cited the Vineet Narain judgment to support Verma's pleas.

The members of the party raised slogans demanding reinstatement of Alok Verma as CBI Director and also sought an apology from PM Modi for tarnishing the image of the probe agency. Verma had claimed that the CBI's autonomy was being compromised as "certain investigations into high functionaries do not take the direction that may be desirable to the government".
