Trump Calls Migrant Caravan a National Emergency

A group of migrants rests at the central park in Ciudad Hidalgo Mexico

A USA -bound caravan of thousands of mostly Honduran migrants whom President Donald Trump has declared unwelcome, crowded into the Mexican border city of Tapachula on Sunday, setting up impromptu camps in public spaces under a heavy rain.

Thousands of people seeking to escape poverty and violence in their homelands have pushed into Mexico despite efforts to hold back the migrant caravan at a bridge on the Guatemala-Mexico border. "If he doesn't repent, he's going to hell".

Local leaders say hundreds of people who were part of the migrant caravan have given up their journey and are returning to their homes in Honduras and Guatemala. Thousands of Central American migrants now walking to the USA border are doing the same, fleeing deadly violence on a trek that has drawn global focus.

- Thousands of Honduran migrants hoping to reach the US stretched out on rain-soaked sidewalks, benches and public plazas in the southern Mexico city of Tapachula, worn down by another day's march under a blazing sun.

He said that the immigration laws in the United States need to change and blamed the Democrats for not voting to change them. Representatives for the White House and the US Border Patrol did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

Later in the day, authorities in Guatemala said another group of about 1,000 migrants had entered that country from Honduras.

Mexican authorities have taken a firmer stand against this caravan than the one that traversed the country in the spring - partly at the urging of Mr. Trump, who threatened to cancel the trade deal he is planning with Mexico unless officials block entry.

With Mexico's immigration authorities controlling migration more assiduously, Central Americans were forced to take more isolated, risky routes where the chances of being mugged were higher.

Trump's "unknown Middle Easterners" likely refers to Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales' claim last week that his country has apprehended and deported "close to 100 people" linked to the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group, and more than 1,000 MS-13 gang members, as the caravan crossed Guatemala. The number of people applying for asylum in Mexico has soared by more than 150 percent since Trump was elected president. Must change laws!Caravan of migrants grows as it heads to U.S.

"They have a lot of everybody in that group, it's a disgusting thing, and it's a lot bigger than 5,000 people, and we've got to stop them at the border", Trump told reporters outside the White House.

"These migrant caravans are not a border crisis", Oglesby says.

The Trump administration welcomes the Government of Mexico's collaboration with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to address refugee and migration issues in the region, including the influx of people arriving in Mexico. It remains unclear how numerous caravan's new additions were previously deported from the US for committing violent crimes.

He was speaking specifically of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, the three countries that account for most of the children and families flowing north in recent years.
