Russia probe revival expected if Democrats win House

US President Donald Trump's persistently low approval ratings may dash any Republican hopes of bucking history by avoiding the loss of House seats in the midterm elections

Democrats, while still favored overall, have been unable to build a decisive edge over Donald Trump's Republicans, meaning that the president might avoid the severe electoral slap-down the opposition party had hoped to inflict. Whitmer is poised to do well in bellwether Oakland, which also has two major congressional races, and Democrats are running female candidates in all eight legislative seats considered to be competitive there.

The midterm elections will be "a tale of two political maps", with Democrats likely making gains in the House while Republicans have a built-in advantage in the Senate, said Ken Thomas, Associated Press White House correspondent.

Nonetheless, should the midterm results unfold as expected, Democratic control of one house will certainly alter the way things work in Trump World, and the "check" in the "check and balance" system that defines the US government will actually mean something once again.

Democrats like Schiff, and fellow California Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell, say they'll wait for Mueller to conclude his investigation before jumping into one of their own, but there are things they're convinced Mueller has missed and issues that may be relevant to a collusion probe that other investigations have ignored.

The president's disapproval has dropped by the same margin. To reclaim control of the House of Representatives, the Democrats need to hold all of their seats plus win 23 more, which is definitely possible.

"The House and the Senate always seemed likely to produce somewhat differing outcomes, which complicates a "blue wave" narrative". Twenty-nine percent of registered voters said their votes were meant to send a signal of support to Trump, 33 percent said it was meant to signal opposition, and 36 percent said it's not a message either way on the president.

This comes at a time when the House and Senate elections are going in totally opposite directions.

But after a bitter fight over the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, what was once seen as an opportunity for the Democrats to make inroads on the map, is now looking more contentious.

Elsewhere, Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke has raised millions of dollars in his bid to unseat Texas Sen.

Trump, who has predicted his party will do "very well" in the midterms, said Monday he would produce a "resolution" calling for the tax cut. Of the 35 contested seats, 26 are held by Democrats - 10 of those in states Trump won.

Democrats are especially enthusiastic about their chances to take Republican-leaning seats in suburban Detroit's Oakland County and western Wayne County - where college-educated, more affluent women may be turned off by President Donald Trump.

FiveThirtyEight gives the Democrats only one chance in five of retaking the Senate.

Democrat Hillary Clinton carried Nevada by 2 percentage points in the 2016 White House race.

The Democrats are "heavily concentrated in cities and urban areas ..."
