Former NFL Player, Sacramento Standout Rae Carruth Released From Prison

Cherica Adams was 7 months pregnant with #CarolinaPanthers receiver Rae Carruth's son when she was murdered by a hitman, Van Brett Watkins.

Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth was released from a North Carolina prison on Monday morning, serving nearly two decades for conspiring to kill his pregnant girlfriend.

In 2003, Adams was awarded almost $5.8 million in damages in a wrongful death lawsuit, but she said she's received hardly any money from that judgment since the four men convicted in the plot have been imprisoned or unemployed since that time.

Carruth was found guilt of conspiracy to commit the murder of his pregnant girlfriend, who was eight months pregnant with Carruth's child at the time. Finding him not guilty of first-degree murder meant that the death penalty was off the table and paved the way for his 18-to-24-year sentence. Along with being caught, accomplices who aided Carruth were caught and sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Carruth spent his final weekend at the Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton.

"I let him down as he came into this world and the only way that I can make that right and the only way I can work out my relationship with my son is to be there for him", Carruth wrote. Watkins pulled up alongside her vehicle and opened fire, hitting Adams 4 times. I'm just going to be honest with you. He was born a month prematurely with cerebral palsy, as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting, according to ESPN.

On the night of the shooting, Carruth and Adams had gone to see the movie The Bone Collector, taking separate cars to the theatre.

Carruth still claims he wasn't intending to have Adams killed, but acknowledges a responsibility for what happened. I'm nervous just about how I'll be received by the public, ' Carruth, now 44, told WSOC-TV on Sunday. I still have to live.

'I don't want to harm Ms. Adams.

"He's matured. He's a lot more introspective than he used to be, and I think he wants to get out of North Carolina", he said. In an interview last week, he said he just wants to be forgiven. The former Panthers' wide-receiver has said he wants to have a relationship with his son. Michael Kennedy, who obtained the gun that was used and drove the auto in the drive-by, testified against Carruth and was released in 2011.
