CDC Investigates Cases Of Rare Neurological 'Mystery Illness' In Kids

A victim of polio

"I encourage parents to seek medical care right away if you or your child develops sudden weakness or loss of muscle tone in arms and legs". In the most severe cases, AFM can cause trouble breathing and may require ventilator support.

Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a syndrome characterized by rapid onset of flaccid weakness in one or more limbs. In total, there have been 386 confirmed cases since 2014.

More broadly, she noted, "there is a lot we don't know about AFM".

Because of the nature of the illness' symptoms and the area of the spinal cord it attacks, it is sometimes referred to as a polio-like disease. A spokeswoman for hospital said they have notified the health department and are working with the CDC to learn more about the illness.

And for now, it's hard to say if 2018 will equal or surpass spikes seen in 2014 and 2016, Messonnier said, adding that state and federal health officials haven't finished the whole diagnostic algorithm for numerous cases reported over the past several weeks.

2014: 120 cases nationwide across 34 states. There have been cases each year since, but the numbers have been higher on alternate years.

"This is actually a pretty dramatic disease", she said.

The condition remains very rare.

Parents of a sick child should be on the lookout for any signs of weakness in the arms or legs, Pardo-Villamizar said.

A seventh child has been diagnosed with a rare, paralyzing illness that has seen an uptick in cases this year in the US, the Minnesota Department of Health said.

Five children in Maryland have contracted symptoms of an illness similar to polio this fall, according to state health officials. But other neurological conditions, including Transverse Myelitis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome and West Nile virus infection, also cause lesions on the spinal cord, making it hard for physicians to make a quick and definite diagnosis.

The agency has not yet confirmed whether the New Hampshire patient, a juvenile from Rockingham County, contracted AFM or if it is another illness, said Jake Leon, a spokesman for the state Department of Health and Human Services. "It seems like they're mostly clustered in the summer, but they can occur throughout the year", said Berbari.

Rathore, the Jacksonville specialist, said he was not shocked at seeing a case this year.

The CDC is investigating the outbreak.

State health officials in Minnesota issued an alert to doctors this month after six children there were diagnosed with AFM.

For example, the CDC doesn't know who may be at higher risk for developing AFM or why some are at higher risk, she said. Ninety percent of AFM patients are 18 years old or younger. To date, no pathogen has been consistently detected in AFM patients. There is no specific treatment or cure for the illness.

In September, Pardo-Villamizar and his colleagues published a follow-up of 16 patients stricken in 2016 that concluded that "the majority of children with AFM have limited motor recovery and continued disability".
