Saudi Arabia to admit Khashoggi died during 'interrogation gone wrong'

Trump sending Pompeo 'immediately' to meet Saudi king over missing journalist

Members of his family called for an investigation, in a statement released on Monday.

A number of powerful US executives said they pulled out of an investment summit in Riyadh later this month because of the case.

After gathering information from the Turks and the joint team, "the feeling from the leadership was we needed an internal investigation to make sure we're getting the right story here", the Saudi official said.

Speaking with reporters on the White House lawn, Trump once again emphasized that the Saudi government "firmly denies" that it had anything to do with Khashoggi's disappearance, and he suggested that there was another culprit to blame.

CNN received no response when reaching out to the CEO, managing director and organizers of the conference about whether a delay had been discussed. "All they're going to do is give it to other countries, and I think that would be very foolish".

The alleged incident led to business executives and media companies pulling out of a major investment conference in Saudi Arabia this month.

The organizers of the event said in a statement Monday that the conference will move ahead as planned starting October 23, despite speakers and sponsors pulling out.

Saudi Arabia has pledged to economically retaliate for any USA punitive action.

In a sign of new cooperation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia that could shed light on the disappearance, Turkish investigators wearing coveralls and gloves entered the consulate Monday. They provided no further details.

The White House previously brushed aside threats by Saudi Arabia that it may economically retaliate for any US punitive action imposed over the suspected murder of Khashoggi, pledging a "swift, open, transparent investigation" into his disappearance.

The U.S. president gave no evidence to support the theory.

Executives and media partners have been dropping out of the event since Khashoggi disappeared in Turkey in what Turkish officials say was a killing orchestrated by the Saudis.

Trump called Pompeo on Sunday night and asked him to have face-to-face meetings with the Saudi leaders, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. He said in Georgia that Pompeo may add a stop in Turkey. A Saudi delegation reportedly had entered the consulate one hour before the Turkish police arrived and appeared still to be inside as the search was conducted.

The consulate was the last place Khashoggi was seen before he vanished on October 2.

A Turkish security source has told the BBC that officials have audio and video evidence proving Mr Khashoggi was murdered inside the building.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud spoke on the phone about the issue on Sunday evening. European allies have urged "a credible investigation" and accountability for those responsible.

Khashoggi, a familiar face on Arab talk shows, moved to the United States a year ago fearing retribution for his criticism of Prince Mohammed, who has cracked down on dissent with arrests.

Turkish sources allege he was killed by a 15-strong team of Saudi agents but Riyadh insists that he left the consulate unharmed.

" In it, author S.V. Date quotes Courtney Radsch of the Committee to Protect Journalists and former Central Intelligence Agency analyst Ned Price to claim Trump's rhetoric likely led to Khashoggi's disappearance".
