Mnuchin says he will not attend Saudi investment conference

Jamal Khashoggi has not been seen since entering Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago

Turkish sources said the authorities have an audio recording but Ankara has not shared the graphic evidence with USA or European allies who are also investigating Khashoggi's disappearance.

Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi monarchy who wrote for The Washington Post, has not been seen since that day. "You're going to get me in trouble". "I will be forever grateful he chose The Post as his final journalistic home one year ago and gave us the chance to work together".

Turkish investigators wearing hazmat suits searched the Saudi consul general's residence in Istanbul on Wednesday, two days after the Saudi consulate in the city was searched.

In a still image from surveillance camera footage taken Oct. 2, 2018, and published Thursday, Oct. 18, 2019, by the pro-government Turkish newspaper Sabah, a man previously seen with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's entourage during an April trip to the US walks at Ataturk Airport in Isanbul.

Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2 and is feared dead.

Attiah wrote that the Post held off on publishing the article because its editors hoped Khashoggi would eventually turn up, and would be involved in the editing process.

The searches and the leaks in Turkish media have ensured the world's attention remains focused on what happened to Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who went into a self-imposed exile in the United States over the rise of Prince Mohammed.

Khashoggi noted how some journalists were imprisoned for speaking out against Arab governments as leaders exercised an apparent "free rein" to silence the media.

In the column, the Saudi journalist argued in favor of a free press in the Middle East. He was the head of Saudi Arabia's Forensic Commission at the time of his visit to Australia, VIFM's annual report from 2014-2015 notes.

Saudi officials have denied the allegations but it has done nothing to prevent the growing backlash against the regime across the world.

"This column perfectly captures his commitment and passion for freedom in the Arab world".

Pompeo also pointed out that the USA has had a "long strategic relationship" with Saudi Arabia, and "we need to be mindful of that" in this process. But on Wednesday, Trump told reporters: "We've asked for it ... if it exists" - before adding that it "probably does" exist.

Mnuchin's announcement came moments after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stepped out of the White House and told reporters the Saudis had "assured me they will conduct a complete, thorough investigation of all of the facts surrounding Mr. Khashoggi and do so in a timely fashion and that the report itself will be transparent".

Meanwhile, International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde has become the latest high-profile figure to withdraw from a major Saudi investment conference next week following Mr Khashoggi's disappearance.

Asked if the U.S. would be willing to walk away from Saudi Arabia, Trump said: "I do not want to do that and frankly they have a tremendous order, $110 billion", referring to a promised United States arms sales to the kingdom.

A spokeswoman for PSPS Consultants, which had organised the trip for the Dutch governement, said: "All trade missions to the country have been suspended for now".
