USAF Pilot Killed in Russian-Made Su-27 Fighter Crash in Ukraine

A Ukrainian Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet is seen during an event last month. On Tuesday an American pilot on board a similar aircraft was killed when it crashed during a military training in Ukraine

The two pilots, the other of whom was Ukrainian, were the only people on board.

'Today, about 5 p.m., near Ulanov village (between Berdychev and Khmelnyk) during the performance of the training-combat flight, the fighter aircraft Su-27 crashed.

According to the Ukrainian Military Portal, the accident took place during the multinational military exercise titled "Clear Sky-2018".

California Air National Guard F-15s were deployed to Starokostiantyniv Air Base in Ukraine to train alongside Ukrainian fighters, reported Air Force Times earlier this month.

Later, U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE)has confirmedthat a U.S. service member was involved in the incident, but has no made an official announcement as to their status.

In its own statement, the U.S. Air Force was not immediately able to confirm any casualties.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Ukraine on October 8 began a series of large-scale air force exercises called Clear Sky 2018 with the United States and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries. Moreover, officers from the Ukrainian Air Force have started their own investigation into the cause of the crash.

"Clear Sky 2018 is a joint and multinational exercise that will involve approximately 950 personnel from nine nations, including Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States", a September news release from the Air Force stated.

Details are few and a spokesman for the California Air National Guard in Fresno said all information about the crash would be coming from United States Armed Forces Europe.
