Cologne police: Hostage incident at train station

Police are urging people to stay away from Cologne's main train station

A male suspect sustained life-threatening injuries in the incident.

"Witnesses told us that the attacker said he belonged to the Islamic State group as he was entering the restaurant, but we can not confirm this", Cologne Police Marshal Klaus Rueschenschmidt said during a news conference.

Local media reported shots being fired inside the station, something which a police spokesperson later denied.

A police spokeswoman said special forces had been called to the scene.

"We also do not rule out a terrorist attack", Brauns said.

Eyewitnesses said around 6:45 a.m. ET a man entered a pharmacy at Breslauer Platz, near the backside of the train station, and reportedly took one person hostage.

'We have indications that one man is holding one woman, but we haven't been able to really get close, ' Schulte said.

They said the ID likely was the suspect's, but police didn't divulge the name on it.

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily and trains were being canceled or delayed. Ambulances and heavily-armed police were lined up and waiting behind the train station.

Police stormed the pharmacy and captured the hostage-taker.

Officers said the man was injured during the police operation, without giving any further details, and paramedics were seen trying to revive him.
