Thousands without power this morning as Storm Callum hits Ireland overnight

Storm Callum is packing heavy rain and strong winds

Though peak winds have abated in most areas this morning, the aftermath of Storm Callum is still being felt around Ireland, and especially in coastal counties.

Several flights have been cancelled out of Dublin and Belfast due to the storm.

A yellow rain warning covers parts of Scotland, the West Midlands and the north west and is in place until midnight.

The warning comes into affect from 5am on Friday lasting throughout the day until 9pm.

The October school break is one of the busiest weekends of the year for the airport.

A Met Office amber warning - the second highest - is still in place for heavy rain in South Wales until 6pm tonight after starting on Friday.

Storm Callum was named by Met Eireann and is an intense area of low-pressure passing to the west of Ireland, northern England and Scotland during Friday. Some rivers overflowed, flooding homes and leading to a cut in power supplies.

In Northern Ireland, hundreds of homes and businesses experienced power loss.

Just three weeks ago the county was rocked by Storm Ali, as winds reached up to 80 miles per hour and caused chaos throughout the county with trees falling and blocking roads at a number of rural locations across the county.

Natural Resources Wales is warning people to be alert for more flooding as the heavy rain could see rivers continuing to rise on Saturday. Independent bookshop Bookish offered residents of Bridge Street and New Road affected by the flooding who needed somewhere "warm and dry" the chance to call in for a free hot drink and piece of cake.

As the Storm Callum clean-up continues in Wales, commuters have been warned of possible Monday morning disruption - although most major roads and rail routes have reopened.

Windsor, the scene of Friday's royal wedding, looks set to escape the worst of the storm.

"It's going to be blowy but not enough to cause any weather impacts", she said.

"However, for this event, safety comes first and we have taken the decision to postpone the event due to expected adverse weather conditions in the area".
