Cyclone Titli makes landfall

While several areas in coastal Odisha were lashed by rain Wednesday, the IMD has forecast "heavy to very heavy rainfall" at several places and "extremely heavy rainfall" at isolated areas till Thursday under the impact of the "very severe" cyclonic storm which has been gaining strength.

The process of landfall of the very severe cyclone Titli started early Thursday with surface wind reaching speeds of 126 kmph at Gopalpur in Odisha's Ganjam district, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

About 300,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying districts in Orissa.

Eight people were killed in different storm-related incidents.

Vizagites woke up to with a sense of relief on Thursday after learning that Cyclone Titli had hit about 200 km away in Srikakulam district and the city had escaped damage. The Met department warned of heavy to very heavy rain in several districts of Gangetic West Bengal till Saturday morning and heavy rain for another day thereafter.

Fishermen were advised not to go out to sea as Cyclomne Titli approached.

They were accommodated in 1,112 cyclone shelters.

Patnaik also asked officials to ensure relief facility in areas likely to be affected by the cyclone. While four NDRF teams have been deployed in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam, Srikakulum and Vijaynagram.

Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts of Andhra Pradesh, and Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri districts of Odisha are the pointed out places under the danger radar. The state-owned road transport corporation suspended all bus services on the Andhra-Odisha border area.

The officer said that Gajapati district, which was most affected, received more than 200 mm of rainfall while Mohana block in the district received the maximum rainfall of 315 mm. Meanwhile, Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express was cancelled for today.

Power supply and telephone links were disrupted and road communication snapped due to uprooted trees at many places of Gajapati district.
