Africa's youngest billionaire kidnapped outside luxury hotel

Hunt on as Tanzanian billionaire Mohamed Dewji abducted in Dar

A new report by The Guardian states that Mohammed Dewji, a man popularly referred to as Africa's youngest billionaire, has been kidnapped.

Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji has been kidnapped in early Thursday morning incident which spread like a bush-fire on social media platforms.

The police boss mentioned that a search operation for the business man had been initiated adding that road blocks had been erected to ensure the perpetrators don't leave the country.

"They came in a auto to the hotel and started shooting in the air before they took him away".

With a reputation as one of East Africa's leading forces in regional trade and business development, Dewji served in parliament from 2005 until 2015.

The motive for the kidnapping is still unknown, although police expect this to be a "ransom" kidnapping.

In 2013 he became the first Tanzanian to grace the cover of Forbes magazine, and was in 2015 named Forbes Africa Person of the Year.

He is also a shareholder in the famous Simba Club in Dar es Salaam.

According to The Guardian, the regional governor, Paul Makonda, said Mr Dewji was kidnapped by whites travelling in two vehicles. "They then drove quickly from the area and headed towards Masaki", he said.

Dewji, 43, has a net worth of $1.5 billion and is Tanzania's only billionaire, according to Forbes.

Dar es Salaam special zone commander said security police around the country, including at airports and all exit points have been put on high alert in the hunt for the abductors.

Mr Dewji is the owner and chief executive of the multibillion-dollar Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Ltd (METL Group).
