France raises questions over disappearance of Interpol chief

Interpol chief Meng Hongwei reportedly vanishes on visit to China

Meng was last seen in France on September 29, police sources said. The statement also added that the secretary general, and not the president, is responsible for the worldwide police agency's daily operations. His term is due to expire in 2020. He is a veteran of China's police and security systems, serving as the country's vice minister of public security and the head of the country's Interpol bureau. The agency added, "This is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China".

Since Meng continued to hold positions in the security establishment concurrently with his role as Interpol president, that may have placed him under additional pressure.

France, China and Interpol officials are yet to comment on the reports.

"Exchanges with Chinese authorities continue", the ministry said in a statement.

It was opened after Meng's wife went to police to report her husband missing.

But Interpol has in the past denied this, saying its head does not intervene in day-to-day operations, which are handled by secretary-general Juergen Stock, a German.

Interpol has 192 member nations, in an organization that allows police agencies to collaborate and share resources.

After his election human rights groups expressed concern that the move could help China pursue political dissidents who have fled the country. He had also served as director of the coastguard and deputy head of the Chinese state oceanic administration.

His duties in China would have put him in close proximity to former leaders, some who had fallen afoul of Xi's campaign.

Xi has placed a premium on getting officials and businesspeople accused of fraud and corruption to return from overseas, making Meng's position even more sensitive.

A person familiar with the investigation into the disappearance said the initial working assumption of Western investigators was that Meng had antagonised Chinese authorities in some way and had been detained as a result.

Meng's wife, who has remained in Lyon with their children according to police sources, was receiving protection, it said.
