Wolves wanted Simmons in potential Butler trade

Jimmy Butler would fit best as rental for team trying to win this year

It was never a secret that Butler grew unhappy with the Wolves, and rumors of his imminent exit began circling months before his actual trade request.

The Houston Rockets are reportedly making a push to add Jimmy Butler.

Meanwhile, there have been numerous reports that Thibodeau and his assistant, general manager Scott Layden, have been dragging their feet on trading Butler and ignoring an directive from owner Glen Taylor to get a trade done.

Trades don't usually happen overnight, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the T'wolves are still listed at +175, especially since head coach Tom Thibodeau says that he won't complete any trade he feels is bad for Minnesota.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Timberwolves are asking for proven veterans, future assets, cap space and prospects.

On Tuesday, Thibodeau said Minnesota plans to "honor his request" and is now "seeing what is out there".

Then, the day after, Thibs said he would trade Butler. The Timberwolves would fulfill Butler's wish and relieve the negative tension that has been plaguing them throughout the process. The four-time All Star has indicated to the Minnesota Timberwolves that Miami is his preferred trade destination. The Miami Heat, who have been among the most aggressive teams pursuing a trade for Butler, find the price too high.

The Philadelphia 76ers lost interest when the Timberwolves asked about 2017-18 NBA Rookie of the Year Ben Simmons, The Ringer reported Thursday.

In 59 games for Minnesota last season, Butler averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.0 steals to help the team end a playoff drought that went back to 2004.

Butler is set to earn just over $19 million next season.
