Amazon to launch Alexa-powered microwave, amplifier, subwoofer, and more

Amazon plans to release at least 8 new Alexa devices, including a microwave oven and in-car gadget

Both companies have devices which can be connected to and controlled using Alexa.

Amazon is planning to release a whole bunch of new Alexa-enabled devices this year, including - naturally - a microwave oven, according to a report from CNBC.

It could release a microwave, amplifier, receiver, subwoofer and an in-car gadget, CNBC reported, citing sources close to the situation. Alexa was initially considered a geeky experiment at Amazon. A survey from digital agency Acquity detailed that by 2019, nearly two-thirds of people plan to own a smart home device. Rumors of new products such as these indicate Amazon is looking to get a greater foothold in the smart home sphere, possibly spinning out the Alexa brand into a range of devices of its own.

The information comes from CNBC, which reports that Amazon is planning to release various voice-controlled devices allegedly including a subwoofer, amp, microwave oven, and something that will be used within a auto, all of them featuring Alexa.

Earlier this year, Amazon acquired the smart doorbell maker Ring, which also makes devices that are compatible with Alexa. Now, it seems Amazon is hoping to take things a step further with a clutch of new devices.

Amazon Echo relies on Microsoft's Bing search engine and Wikipedia, while Google Home uses the company's own Google Search.

More so than other virtual assistants including Siri and the Google Assistant, Amazon's Alexa has always been focused on the home. All of these will be Alexa-enabled with some even having Alexa built in. Sonos, for example, has a similar business model, as it said in its quarterly filing that it relies on "custom installers of home audio systems for a significant portion of our sale".

Amazon declined to comment to CNBC regarding the report. With eight new Alexa-enabled devices, the company is working along that goal.
