Williams fined $17,000 for U.S. Open code violations

Osaka storms past Keys to reach first Grand Slam final

The two-time Grand Slam champion watched on as Williams was defeated by 20-year-old Japanese star Naomi Osaka - a match that was shrouded in controversy.

Serena Williams has been fined a total of $17,000 for her three code violations during the US Open final against Naomi Osaka on Saturday.

You had a feeling that Serena Williams' outburst was coming.

The first violation came when Ramos ruled that Williams was receiving illegal coaching from her coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

She also called Ramos a "thief", asserting that he stole the point from her. Ramos then penalized Williams further, citing "verbal abuse". I haven't cheated in my life.

Earlier, Serena lashed out on chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who asked Serena not to take coaching from the outside and she did not adhere by that and got into a verbal tussle with him. Even though her coach has admitted to coaching, Williams has made it clear that she did not receive any coaching. "You own me an apology".

"You will never be on another court of mine as long as you live". You are the liar. Say it you're sorry. When are you going to give me my apology? "You're a thief, too!" This prompted a heated dialogue with the umpire Carlos Ramos.

"I'm not a cheater. She felt humiliated by the warning", said the Frenchman.

From there, Williams summoned the tournament referee to the court and said male tennis players are not punished for similar offences. There is a lot of men out here that have said a lot things and because they're men, that doesn't happen to them. "That is not right".

Afterwards, the American said it was "sexist" to have been penalised a game.

Mouratoglou then suggested tennis needs to change some of its code rules. It blows my mind.

To recap, Williams' final match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York, took a hard turn on Saturday when she was given a violation for gestures made by her coach Patrick Mouratoglou. "Actress Gabrielle Union called her "the best athlete the world has ever seen" and said Osaka demonstrated "#BlackGirlMagic & fierce determination".

"If I'm honest I was coaching, I don't think she looked at me", he said. "We don't have any code, and I know that you don't know that and I understand why you may have thought that was coaching, but I'm telling you it's not. When a man does the same, he's "outspoken" & and there are no repercussions", Billie Jean King wrote on Twitter.

Williams put her arm around Osaka's shoulder.

During a changeover, Williams resumed her argument with the umpire, this time saying he was attacking her character and was a "thief".

The tennis pro copped a warning from a chair umpire for readjusting her shirt, having noticed it was back to front.

She described the awarding of penalties for relatively minor infractions as "pure pettiness" and an "abuse of power".

The crowd booed in support of Williams.

Saturday's defeat comes at the heels of Williams' remarkable return to the game after the c-section birth of her daughter, Alexis.
