New wildfire rips through northern California

Dramatic moment wildfire explodes along a California freeway

The U.S. Forest Service, which is leading the efforts to battle the four-day-old wildfire, reported Saturday morning that the fire above Shasta Lake near the community of Lakehead had grown by about 5,000 acres overnight to 36,970 acres, according to a Forest Service incident report.

The Delta Fire rages out of control tonight two miles north of Lakehead, 40,580 acres in size.

Truckers abandoned their vehicles and motorists screamed in fear as they came dangerously close to an explosive wildfire in California.

The Delta Fire has grown to almost 41,000 acres and continues to force the closure of a stretch of Interstate 5 this morning with another evaluation of the threat to public safety set to take place this afternoon, according to a Caltrans tweet.

"There's vehicles scattered all over", Brandon Vaccaro of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection told the Redding Record Searchlight.

Authorities closed a major highway and issued evacuation orders to areas in the path of the expanding conflagration.

The fire shut down miles of Interstate 5 and there was no immediate word on when it would reopen. Residents were urged to be prepared to leave if the fire threatened.

'It isn't a lot of people, ' he said.

A 45-mile (72-km) stretch of the I-5, a key north-south route through the entire state, has remained closed since then, requiring traffic detours of up to 120 miles (193 km).

The Delta Fire was burning on both sides of Interstate 5, which has made it more hard to control the flames, Underhill said. Officials said the fire was caused by humans, but they didn't say how someone started it.

A nearby fire in the Redding area burned some 1,100 homes and killed eight people last month.

As a result of the record-breaking "intense and large" wildfires in July and August, including the Carr Fire's deadly tornado of flame, Pimlott said less than $11 million of the agency's 2018 $442.8 million budget remains.

Meanwhile, Amtrak's Coast Starlight service is temporarily delayed from Sacramento to Klamath Falls, Oregon because of the fire, a spokeswoman said.

Saturday's weather forecast for the Lakehead area calls for much calmer 2 to 6 miles per hour winds out of the north until late afternoon when they will be out of the south.

"They were the largest fires, and as soon as you bought those fires under control, they could re-deploy those firefighters to other areas within the larger area.up to Oregon, Washington and then down to Southern California".
