Protesters interrupt Kavanaugh confirmation hearing for second day

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh arrives on the first day of his confirmation hearing in front of the U.S. Senate

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) accused Democrats of trying to conduct the hearing by "mob rule".

Brett Kavanaugh faces four days before the Senate Judiciary Committee. In Meyer v. Nebraska, the Court struck down a Nebraska law that prohibited teaching foreign languages in public schools to young students, finding that it violated the right to liberty, which includes the right to "establish a home and bring up children".

The strategy was front-and-center as Kavanaugh's hearing got underway Tuesday, with Democrats immediately calling on the committee to adjourn.

What were the protests about?

Veteran Democrat Dick Durbin said Kavanaugh "totally reversed" after working in the White House when Bush was considering warrantless wiretapping and torture of enemy combatants, and warned that a similar position would only serve to insulate Trump.

Others claimed the judge would let people with pre-existing medical conditions be stripped of medical coverage. "This is a mockery and a travesty of justice", shouted one woman. Another cried: "Our democracy is broken!"

Republicans also past year reduced the margin for advancing Supreme Court nominations from 60 votes in the 100-seat Senate to a simple majority in order to force through the confirmation of Trump's first high court nominee, Neil Gorsuch. Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, said a committee vote is likely to occur September 20.

Protesters dressed in The Handmaid's Tale costume, protest outside the hearing room where Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

Democrats accuse Senate Republican leaders of stealing a Supreme Court seat by refusing to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee to the high court, Merrick Garland, in 2016, allowing Trump to fill a Supreme Court vacancy instead. Democrats have also complained that they have not received all relevant documents. An additional 42,000 documents were released Monday night.

But the panel chairman refused to delay the process.

Interested in Supreme Court?

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, praised Kavanaugh for hiring female lawyers as his clerks as a judge on the District of Columbia court of appeals, and then posed questions about whether Kavanaugh was aware of sexual harassment allegations against retired circuit court Judge Alex Kozinski in California. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). Kavanaugh does not support gun control legislation, and the National Rifle Association has spent almost $ 1 million in support of him.

Why is the nomination contentious?

One of the most notable ambiguities in Kavanaugh's record is the question of what he really thinks about the validity of the United States v. Nixon, the famous 1974 decision where the Supreme Court ruled that President Richard Nixon was required to turn over tapes in response to a subpoena. Kennedy had a track record of siding with the more liberal justices on the bench on some decisions, the more conservative wing on others.

A security guard stepped in as Mr Kavanaugh turned and left the witness table. So far, there are no signs of Republican defections.

The National Archives is also preparing to release more than 1 million documents from Kavanaugh's time in the White House counsel's office.

The most likely outcome of this week's hearings is a vote along party lines to send Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate. The court begins its next term in October. But with Judiciary Committee Democrats divided between younger upstarts and veterans hesitant to completely buck Senate norms, they settled on merely disrupting the proceedings - for now.

In the report, the NAACP wrote that, as President George W. Bush's White House staff secretary, Kavanaugh helped the administration file briefs against the University of Michigan's equal opportunity admissions policies in 2003.

Democrats have raised concerns that if the special counsel investigation were to make its way to the supreme court, Kavanaugh could not be impartial toward the president who appointed him.
