Historic wins in two MA primary races

Bostonians cast their votes at the Another Course To College precinct on Nov. 7 2017 Staff

Pressley won the Democratic nomination for Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, defeating Democratic Rep. Mike Capuano to become the first African-American woman in this position in the history of MA. Her fellow Democrats, establishment or progressive, will need to win 23 seats to take back the House of Representatives. Pressley argued in her campaign that Capuano represents an old guard of politics, and it's time for a change.

Johanna Ediger of Quincy was among the voters hoping to oust an incumbent Tuesday night, casting her ballot for Lynch's opponent, Brianna Wu of Dedham. In making his concession remarks, Capuano told his campaign team, "I will tell you Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman and I will tell you that MA is going to be well served". Meanwhile, Reps. Stephen Lynch and Bill Keating fended off progressive challenges by wide margins to clinch the Democratic nomination for the November election. Pressley defeated 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano, who had been endorsed by nearly every major figure in the state's political establishment, including Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the New York Times reports.

She was endorsed by fellow congressional upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who knocked off veteran Rep. Joe Crowley of NY in June.

A Boston city councilor's historic defeat of a 10-term Democratic congressman was the latest sign of a generational shift in the party that is strengthening the clout of women and minority candidates, inspired by anger at Republican U.S. President Donald Trump.

Capuano was the only Democratic incumbent in MA to lose a primary Tuesday night, with three others easily fending off challenges from the left. Without a republican on the ballot this Fall, the 44-year-old is nearly guaranteed to become the state's first African-American congresswoman. They moved to Brooklyn, and Pressley attended Boston University from 1992 to 1994, but left school to work full time at a hotel to support her mother.

On Tuesday night, the socialist tweeted that she "bonded" with Pressley "over running while constantly told it's "not our turn, ' that we 'weren't ready, ' 'good enough, ' or 'experienced" enough". Robert Pittenger(N.C.) and Mark Sanford (S.C.) and Democratic Rep.

"The nature of the 44-year-old city councilor's [Pressley's] campaign - a woman of color taking on a white, male longtime congressman in a Democratic primary - drew immediate comparisons [to Ocasio-Cortez's campaign] Wednesday", he added. That race remained too close to call Wednesday. "It matters who those Democrats are". "People of every walk of life".
