Steve Bannon uninvited from New Yorker event after celebrity backlash

David Remnick, the US-based magazine's editor-in-chief, announced the reversal on Twitter on Monday when the festival's lineup was met immediate backlash.

Multiple actors and celebrities announced on Monday that they would be dropping out of this year's New Yorker Festival over its decision to invite former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon to be its headline speaker - and thus forced the festival to rescind Bannon's invitation.

In an earlier phone interview with the Times, Remnick said he had "every intention of asking him hard questions and engaging in a serious and even combative conversation".

Facing widespread outrage, The New Yorker has dropped plans to interview Steve Bannon during its festival next month.

"I've changed my mind", Remnick wrote in a memo to staff. I've thought this through and talked to colleagues - and I've re-considered.

"I've changed my mind", Remnick said.

This is a developing story.

The decision to cut Bannon from the program came only hours after the announcement that he would be appearing as complaints and threats to pull out of the festival came pouring in via Twitter.

'This is PT Barnum level horse***t.

He said he would consider interviewing him instead in a "traditionally more journalistic" setting in the future.

"Remnick also argued that interviewing Bannon is not endorsing him and his "'ideas' of white nationalism, racism, antisemitism and illiberalism". "After being contacted several months ago and with seven weeks of continual requests for this event, I accepted The New Yorker's invitation with no thought of an honorarium", Bannon said. He helped propel Donald Trump to the White House, and he is advising the populist far-right in several European countries where they are close to power or in government.

Comedian and producer Judd Apatow said he would be withdrawing from the event because he could not take part in any event "that normalises hate". By conducting an interview with one of Trumpism's leading creators and organizers, we are hardly pulling him out of obscurity. Kathryn Schulz was among the New Yorker staff writers who tweeted that they had informed Remnick directly about their objections. Bridget Everett tweeted that she's out if Bannon is in, Jimmy Fallon simply wrote "I'm Out", and Mike Birbiglia and Bo Burnham also let it be known that they would not participate. In fact, I would have loved to see Remnick interview Bannon in person and in front of a hostile audience, and while I would never have invited him if I ran the show (who needs that kind of headache?) by disinviting him, I think Remnick made an even larger mistake.
