Sen. John McCain was recalled as a loving father, joke-telling friend and great statesman in tributes by family, former members of Congress and other prominent American officials at a memorial service at Washington's National Cathedral. He always took great pride in being principled and fair, right up until the very end'.

Other guests included former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, comedian Jay Leno, and former senators Bob Dole and John Kerry. Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner, however, were in attendance. The animosity between Mr McCain and Mr Trump had been mutual, and they clashed often. "He's not a war hero", Trump said about McCain, who was a Vietnam veteran and a prisoner of war.

John McCain, who died on August 25 at age 81, will be buried in a private ceremony on Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Md.

Former President George W. Bush said John McCain, "detested the abuse of power" and hailed the senator's "combination of courage and decency". It's a politics that pretends to be fearless and tough, but is instead born of fear.

As a presidential candidate, Trump mocked McCain for getting captured in Vietnam. Lindsey Graham, Gen. David Petraeus and McCain's son Jack will give tributes during the private service and burial.

Bush praised McCain for standing up for the working-class Americans over the interests of Washington, D.C.

Obama also opened up about his behind-the-scenes relationship McCain and the bond they shared across party lines. Both men bested McCain in separate presidential bids. "We're better than this. You were an exception and gave us an ideal to strive for", McCain said.

He had been routinely criticised over his military record by the United States president, who spent some time ahead of the service tweeting out a series of long-standing grievances about the news media, Canada and the Justice Department.

The former President acknowledged the contrast between himself and McCain, saying, "We were standard-bearers of different American political traditions".

"This week's celebration of the life and values and patriotism of this hero, I think have taken our country above all that", he said.

After his death, Bush called McCain "a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order".

Those who spoke came to the National Cathedral at Sen.

The former President said that the late senator "was courageous" and "honest, no matter whom it offended", adding that even "presidents were not spared". "You could disagree on substance", Biden said.

John McCain, for his part, was well-known for his military service in the Vietnam War and particularly for having been held prisoner for five years and tortured by his captors. Larson died in 2014, and McCain wrote in his recent memoir that he wanted to be buried next to his friend, "near where it began".
